Hi everyone....New Bimmer owner. I have an 02 325i. It has high miles at 205,000. I noticed the tranny fluid dark brown and smelled burnt. So, I decided to change the fluid and filter. Everything went well I thought....until I dropped it on the ground and went for a test drive. Now I only have one gear 5th. What did I do wrong and how do I get my quick 325i back?
with 205k miles and an automatic. I think it's safe to say you need another transmission. You can buy used autos all over the net for really cheap. Or if your in Socal I can get you a rebuild to factory new plus various mounts etc for under $1,600 or so.
Yes it does....I'm learning this out the only way I know. The hard way....it's all good. I put valvoline Dex/merc ATF. The wrong fluid. Wow I feel really dumb.

Has nothing to do with that fluid. Did you do the proper procedure, temperature, etc wise? My bet the problem is the level of fluid. Dex 3 which you put would not harm anything immediately...
If he filled it without running it, temp proper etc that wouldnt cause it to go to limp mode right off the bat. Put dex 3 in a zf and bam pissed off trans.

Count the pan bolts. The GM trannies have 22 bolts, the ZF have 14.
I have a 97 BMW 528i 2.8 V6 transmission is stuck in 5th gear if I go over a certain RPM it will downshift and staying that gear till I shut it off and start it back up then it's back in 5th gear any suggestions
Your car is going into 'limp mode' It's a self-protection feature to prevent catastrophic damage to the engine and/or transmission. Without knowing the DTC Codes that are stored, you're just guessing.
OP, be advised that BMW sourced automatic transmissions from GM of France and ZF of Germany. They are different transmissions. They use different fluids. The GM transmission fluid pan has smooth sides. The ZF fluid pan has ribs. The GM transmission uses Dexron3 fluid. The ZF transmission uses a more exotic fluid. There is a specific procedure that must be followed when refilling the transmission. Over- and under-filling the transmission will cause issues.
