F22 / F23 2 Series (2014 - Current)
The 2 Series coupe is the replacement for the E82/E88 1 series coupe. Production starts in November 2013 on the 228i (N20) and M235i (N55) coupes. Look for them in dealerships in February 2014. The convertible F23 2 series will follow in the fall of 2014.

Mein Auto: 2014 228i sport pkg
new owner

took delivery last month of a 2014 228i, sport package. it was off the floor and the price was decent. Traded in a 95 M3. I was concerned that the car was not up to the task...

1st impressions...

size / balance. very comparable.
visibility, not as good as the M. mirrors are too large and create a blind spot on left turns.

brakes... without the track or M package, brakes are quite good but do not have close to the feel of the 20yr old brakes on my old car. would love to trade up!

tech. amazing! except for the fact that I cannot play music or see text messages via bluetooth ( I do not have the NAV pkg. as I'm happy with my HTC M8 and google maps. wish the phone's audio was better integrated.

future plans... upgrade the brakes. want less power assist and more feel. (will E36 M brakes fit?)

can the steering have LESS power assist. car is almost twitchy compared to old car. esp at speed.

bit less body roll. will torsion bars help or are stiffer springs the only option?

yes I could have dealt with these issues upon purchase but only by ordering a 2015... with a substantial wait and price differential. I am happy, but I miss my M!

lastly. took her on a roadtrip from cincy to NY. 32 MPG on midgrade fuel. that is awesome for a sub 5.5 sec 0-60 car. very easy to speed in since there is nil engine noise/vibration with the twin turbos.

one last thing.... speedos/gauges are about an inch too high with steering wheel in correct place. it blockes the upper 1/4th of the display... I am 5'10" tall

Congratulations, fellow Cincinnatian.

You skipped 2 generations of BMW cars! I tried to drive next generation 3 series and didn't like it at all. Yes, I know, not all is the car's fault - a lot of that is in your head and if I could just let go and take a leap of faith, I'd probably be fine with properly optioned F30 in 3-4 months.

That said, I decided on different tactic. I will leave BMW for one sitting (3-4 years) and then come back. A lot less traumatic, I'm sure. On the other hand ... some say once you try "no substitute" it is hard to go back and drive anything else

Good luck with your new car and check Buckeye BMWCCA chapter on Web. This weekend is too late (if you didn't sign up already), but you might join us this October on Mid-Ohio racetrack. That's a lot of fun to be had with completely unmodified street car - and BMWs can take it without a problem.

Why did you get rid of a car you liked?

For the Two, you are shelling out $50K, and is it $50K better than your previous ride? I doubt it. The technology of cars matured decades ago to the point that modern vehicles have insignificant improvement in the areas of performance like handling and HP. What improvements there are concern safety and emissions.

Well the 2-series drives a lot better than early F30s for sure.

I bet you can do something about the power assist. I base that on driving a whole bunch of different 4-series which all had different amount of power steering support, even without DHP. There is something there that BMW can play with. If so, let us know.

As for the brakes, put Akebono Euro Ceramics. They make for a much smoother feel when braking. Huge difference in my car, and I wanted exactly what you say you want. If you car is brand new I'd keep your stock pads, to put them back when selling or something. They aren't big, you can throw them out later if you end up not needing them back.

You'll get used to it. I went from an E36 to F30. Steering and brakes had me asking what was I doing. But now I could never go back.

I do from time to time but the E36 is turning into a garage queen.

You shouldn't have any blind spots if you position your mirrors correctly.

Congrats on the ride!
As much as I have nostalgia for the cars of yore the new engineering is simply amazing. Usually downside is weight but upside is safety, unless you get something more focused.

PS It's not a twin turbo but a twin scroll turbo, they call it double-VANOS. http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...ce.aspx?Id=755

This is pretty odd - I'm also in Cincy (with a 2015 m235i NON x-drive coming in Sept/Oct) and ALSO with a Ducati (Streetfighter) ;-) NO car as fast as the Duc ...
Oh, and I also had 2 M3s previously.

It's $50K because it is both new and better. And, the improvements are very significant indeed. You make it sound as if automobile technology topped out many years ago, but that's just not true. Think about it: precision fuel injection, variable valve timing, computer- controlled, ABS, better MPG, much lower emissions, more power, better drivability, and on and on. And the cars continue to improve.
