My x5 is loosing power and stalls every now and then. Checked battery voltage and its around 5vdc. Jump started and works fine for a day or two and then again. Replaced battery and it lasted a week and then same thing. Heres the kicker, I start the car and the battery shows 11.0vdc while running, I pull the groung cable off and the car turns off. So i put it back on and start it up again. Now its pushing 13.7vdc. I take the cable off and is stays running.
But this keeps happening often.
Voltage regulator? Batteries are supposed to be registered to the vehicle I belive. Taking off and putting on cables while the engine is running is also not recommended for modern engines since it may fry the voltage regulator.
These are not 1970s chevys...pulling cables on and off is an EXCELLENT way to fry a module or two. Your DIY efforts to save a few $ on an alt or regulator will be massively swamped if you F up a FRM or LCM module!
IMO voltage regulator. As I recall it is integral to the alternator as OE...maybe you can replace just the regulator with OEM
I agree with @ard. Don't go connecting/disconnecting electrical things while she's running. In fact, don't go applying much of any lesson learned in the 70s to any modern car. Ask here first. Those of us above a certain age learned some things that no longer apply, especially regarding auto electrical and fuel systems.
It really is true: they don't build 'em like they usedta anymore.
