My dearly beloved has been wanting a convertible for a long time. In Montana? Who knows why? Anyhow, I bought her an 06 Red Solara yesterday in beautiful condition. Having just returned form a hundred mile cruise, I am once again reminded of why I love my BMW. Nothing about the driving experience in the Toyota even comes close to the much older E39. The Solara will serve her purposes very well for a long time and we'll most likely take in of a several thousand mile road trip out to and down the coast in a few weeks. But, I don't think I'll be begging to drive it often. Damn though, I"ll have to start sharing the garage.
Exactly! This is the third Camry I have owned and while they have all been very reliable transportation and gotten one from points A to B I have never felt comfortable trying to test the limits of their handling performance to any degree because there is no way to predict what might happen. With the BMW I know even getting close to the edge exactly how it will likely behave. Stay away from the edge and you can do damn near anything with a broad margin of fun and safety.
I had an 81 Celica once with rear wheel drive that in many ways was the most fun Toyota I have ever had.
Indeed. Plus, I can now take possession of the BMW key with the key pad still intact that I was guilt tripped out of a couple of years ago. "Oh Jim, you get the nice car, can't I at least have the nice Key"?
My wifes Lexus RX300 rides like crap. Probably because it has 150k on it and needs suspension overhauled. I wasnt impressed with the RX's we test drove before we bout this one. I would put in with the Jag S-Type. Both of them have high end names with low end ride quality. Only good thing about her Lex is that it looks like it is in showroom condition on the outside and it will go anywhere you take it.
Yea I agree that Yotas ride like crap. However they are without a doubt the best vehicle I have owned. If the world came to an end I'm getting a 4Runner. Never need to find parts in a Mad Max type world. I love my BMW but comparing it to Toyota or Lexus for that matter is foolish I think. They are two different type of cars. If we are talking LS460 I bet those cars ride much nicer.
I leased a 2011 Honda Accord (company expense) after I totalled my E39 540I and there isn't a day that goes by while driving i don't miss my BMW. I thought I could handle driving the accord, but I was wrong. Now, I'll have to wait 3 years before I can get another car (E60 535).
Weird to see this post!!!!
A few days ago I test drove a Audi A4. I like how they look. The interior was nice too. So I was very eager to get her going. What a big disappointment!!!!!!! The car feels peppy, nothing to bash. I feel good behind the steering wheel too. The seat is comfy. But then, you drive it.... and the steering wheel is sloppy, and then there is something about how the car reacts when turn and drive, I don't know how to exactly describe it. I was thinking: "man, I love my bimmer". Then I see this post...
I believe a few of us were thinking about a new car, test drove one, and then only to run back to the old lady in the garage. With a sigh of relief that she's still there.....
One of the main reasons I jumped ship from Audi to BMW. Audi's... except the latest ones where they revised the front diff placement further forward... are very nose heavy. Their quattro AWD system (except the haldex based ones in the TT and A3) are amazing though and if you need to drive in any sort of large quantities of snow quattro will put X-drive to shame... but... BMWs are supposed to be RWD anyway, not AWD.
So, I just loved the way my '89 535i drive compared to my '89 Audi 200 wagon that I sold the wagon and bought my '03 540i. I dont need a winter vehicle because I have my company truck.
Interesting thread. The Solara is a total chick car. Not much of a comparison. Still, I think we can all agree our E39's are definitely something special.
My wife will be happy at being in; second Chickhood. Lol
This is a bit off of the subject, but this morning in the Missoula paper there is a 1972 2002 in, "very good condition inside and out", with 57K on it for $9000.00. Damn, I wish I wouldn't have bought that Solara last week after all.
In the words of Chris Farley from the movie "Tommy Boy"
Customer - "But why do they put a guarantee on the box?"
Tommy - "Because they know all they sold ya was a guaranteed piece of ****. That's all it is, isn't it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for now, for your customer's sake, for your daughter's sake, ya might wanna think about buying a quality product from me."
Fister said - BMW is the best ****in' car to roll on the Earth
nothing to add , just that E39 is one of the best BMW
resting
LOL
