I bought a 2003 525i about three mnths ago and it has 150k+. Passed MD state inspection after new rear rotors and seems to be a great car but I went to leave the other day, the starter locked up. I have looked for literature, diagrams ect and have yet to find anything helpfull. If I'm not mistaken, the starter looks to be beneath the intake manifold. Can anybody please tell me where to begin, what to look for, and any possible shortcuts....
Ooops. I hadn't seen this when I had replied prior.
Good work. The entire purpose of the bestlinks is to give good answers, in seconds, to previously asked questions.
Always improving by "Incrementalism", and with all of us pitching in together, combining your new links with the old ones, we get the following keyword-rich sentence for the next person to benefit from the search:
- Where is the E39 starter motor located (1) & a BMW E39 6-Cylinder Engine (M52) starter motor DIY (1) and an E38 740iL starter motor DIY (1) (2).

To the OP: Now that we've done your homework for you, what I suggest you do as a payback to the team is to click on those links above (I didn't), and see which ones are helpful for YOUR needs.
Then, to redeem yourself in our eyes, all you need to do is tell us which ones you found most useful for your needs. Then, I'll be glad to add THEM to the bestlinks so that the next person who has the same questions can find those answers instantly.
It's the way we improve things here. We all help find the best references and then we improve that which is missing from them.
What I recommend, is go to the bestlinks and do a control-f search for 'starter'. Then press F3 until you've reviewed all the links (it helps if you have your settings such that the bestlinks is a single page).
Purchased NEW Bosch (SR0448N) starter from Amazon = $132.43 (Prime)
