I did some quick research in the forum and sounds most people like Thule / Yakima root rack set more than BMW ones ( made by Thule? ). Anyway, I could not find threads about snowboard set since most threads are about bikes. I got the following from local REI with 20% OFF sale going on and $30 mail-in rebate from Yakima. Anyone tried this set before?
4 x Rail Grabber
2 x Big Powder Hound Clamp
2 x 58" Cross Bar
Total cost: ~$330 OTD ( including sales tax in CA )
Any feedback is welcome since the weather is bad in N. Cal, so I won't try them on until few days later. Thank you.
I don't board, but Yakima and Thule both make quality stuff. I do recommend locks if they are not included. People will steal the racks off your car.
I use a 53" cross bar (that's from memory so measure the distance between the roof rails). 58" probably has more overhang than you will need for anything but boats or sheets of plywood.
It's even more $$$ but I use a ski box for my several pairs of XC skis - keeps stuff protected from road spray. Having said that, it is a tricky fit to get one that clears the rear spoiler when the hatch is open. The Yakima box I have is no longer in production so I can't say what fits now.
I put a Yakima set on my wife's 328, and it works well. Get the standard tower and cross bar set up, then you can add the accessories you like to hold bikes, skis, boards, lumber, etc. And definitely get the lock sets. Otherwise, someone can lift the entire rack, boards included, off your vehicle. Make sure to get locks that match - one key fits all.
The 53" Thule Aero bars fit my X3. I changed to square bars due to my Kayak lift and had to go to 58" bars. They will stick out around 4"/side so you know. I may cut my bars down by 4" in the spring.
So your 58" bars will appear a long. For me, I only have them on when needed, so no big deal.
Cost-wise, Thule Crossroads supports, square bars with ski/board rack was under $200. Locks add another $50+, depending on number needed. I bought everything at REI's 20% off sale on Thule. That won't happen again until April I believe.
I've always liked Thule over Yak for one reason : square bars - wouldn't have posted this but it sounds like Cloud still can return the Yak if he should re-consider - but then again cost could be a consideration - don't know what the comparable Thule set-up would run ?
Why don't you buy BMW OEM Roof rack? It is lees than US$200 and looks/works great.
