2001 e46 sunroof shade guide broke

Some how I managed to brake a small plastic part on the driver's side of the sunroof sliding shade. The glass part was tiled up and I slid the shade back like I always do and when it hit the stop point, it suddenly kept sliding back into the roof!

After I closed the glass sunroof, the shade did slide back out as usual. After I examined the shade, I could see that the part that guides the shade within a track on the driver's side had broken and was in the track. Without this part, the shade can now be lifted upwards and will move side to side. With the sunroof glass tilted up I can see from the outside the other end of the broken part is held onto the top of the shade by 2 very small allen screws. I figure if I can remove the part, it can be replaced.

Does anyone have experience with this, did they break this part, could they get a replacement from a BMW dealership without buying a whole new shade?

Many thanks. Nelsun

Someone is probably going to tell you to search... I think this has been mentioned many times, but I don't remember the detail on getting it fixed. I have a 2005 and I hope they fixed the issue in the later models... good luck.

EDIT: Here's a recent thread I found:

Mark-

Thanks for the links. I didn't think there would have been anyone else that had a similar problem which is why I didn't do a search. But I will now!

Hey, I've been wondering.... do most people have the issue of the broken guides when they "let" the opening of the roof pull back the shade automatically? I mean, I generally pull the shade back myself (if it was closed) before I open the glass roof. I wonder if there's a difference in the breakage probability depending on the way the shade is handled.

Cool

Had similar problem with my 99' 328i and I finally got tired messing with it and removed the sun shade. If I could just get just the guides I'd put it back in. The So Cal sun is brutal without the shade.

Mine broke about four times. Everytime that my wife used the sunroof. I had to tell my wife pull back the shade first. That seems to have worked. I guess if you lube the guides, then it might not be a problem.

Hello,

I don't know if something is broke on my sunroof visor, but it isn't working anymore! It appearts that what ever rail system its is on, its not anymore. It won't close properly and it won't open, whats up with that?

I will check the thread post earlier, but my expectation for a vehicle near $40K shouldn't have defects like this. Mine is a 2001 325I, bought new.

Welcome to the sometimes bizarro world of BMW--a world where a global maker of luxury/performance cars that prides itself on its engineering abilities is unable to design basic parts like window regulators or suroof shades that don't break constantly. With BMW you should lose all "expectations for a vehicle near $40K" or 60 or 80k for that matter. BMW can't or won't address certain annoying failures. No one really knows how they are capable of being so incompetent in some areas. Even VW (who has similar brain-dead problems w/ trim on the Jetta/Golf finally figured out how to use metal clips instead of plastic in certain areas). Sorry- I don't know what else to say other than now you know. I guess they can't bear the the thought of spending an extra 2 cents per car.

If I had the inclination, I might actually be tempted to write a book about how BMW manages to repeatedly screw up the stupid stuff. There's plenty of "BMW is the greatest company in the wolrd" type books-- but it would be interesting to understand how and why they screw up.
