I went to check the oil in my 525is since I changed it on Sunday and i was checking up on the levels. I ran the car for 10 mins to circulate the oil and then I let it rest for another 10 mins and I checked the level. I was about half way between low and max so I topped it up with bout 300ml of oil. I took it for another 5 min drive around my estate and pulled back into the driveway, let her sit for 5 Mins and I checked the level again.
This time there was no oil on the stick what so ever!!
Is this normal? I usually check the oil when the motor is cold however in the BMW manual it states oil should be checked with warm motor 5 mins after shutdown.
If that's the case my dipstick is telling me the sump is dry!!!!!
i check the oil level with the engine cold.that's when you get the truest of readings.and i don't see any requirement to drive the car around after a top up before taking another reading.just top up and take reading 5 mins after.the oil will drain right to the sump.afterall,we are checking the oil level in the sump.
I've always checked the engine when it's cold, it's just that I stumbled in the manual to check it with the motor warm. My only worry now is that when the engine is warm, the oil reading is just over half way in-between low and max, when it's cold it will be above max... Which is noo good
While we are on the topic of oil level, can someone show a picture of what's the absolute correct level reading on the dip-stick itself. And reading hot, cold, or warm is an ongoing topic, it seems...
Oil fill doesn't really require an "absolute correct level". All that is requires is that the oil is above the MIN level and below the MAX level.
Personally, if I had JUST changed the oil and put in the required amount that is recommended in the owners manual for my particular model...and the oil level was between the MIN & MAX lines on the dip stick...Id' call it a day...and only worry about if if the oil level dropped below the MIN line when I check it again...or if the warning for low oil would appear.
Remove one of the O-rings on the stick to enable easier withdrawal.
