Engine running rough - troubleshooting

Thanks in the past for all of the wonderful information posted on these forums.

My 91 525I is running rough and I am not sure if it is because I used a premium non-brand gas. I since bought some premium Chevron to see if that will help improve the performance.

Car has almost 230,000 miles so am looking for hopefully inexpensive fixes and DIY troubleshooting I can check out. Might add I am a non mechanic but would like to try to know what I am looking at for possible repairs before I take it into a BMW mechanic.

Thanks

If the check engine light is on then it is a good idea to do the stomp test. Do the stomp test even if the light is off.

Vid might help too.

Possible it was bad gas but, fresh gas would then fix the problem.

We need to know which engine is in your 525, is it the sohc(M20) or dohc(M50).

Then a better description of "running rough" because that doesn't really tell us much.

Idle is rough, rough under acceleration, rough all the time? It could be a dozen different things so a better description of the problem will help us get you there.

Thanks for the input, kind of a sputtering, noticeable more when on street and not as much when on freeway. Tach running at 2.5 at 60mph.

Question about the Stomp test? If one or more codes come up, will it give me codes in priority order - in other words, #1 problem code comes up first, followed by #2 code problem, etc?
