I'm new to bmws, just bought a 91 318is with an M50 engine. Im not sure if this should go in the e30 or e36 thread..
Driving it home it would overheat while idling. After doing some research I realized my car doesn't have a fan on the front of the engine.
It does have one on the front of the radiator which I assume is the aux fan. Is it necessary to have the engine fan?
Thanks
Yes with a m50 swap its needed. A spal puller fan is a great option. However, you can work the aux fan using the AC switch (the one with the snow flake on it) inside your car. If you press the button and the fan does not come on, you will need to check the aux fan/wiring.
Yup, it definitely looks like an m42 radiator.
It also looks like most of the ac components weren't carried over with the swap, missing the condenser and compressor.
I'm about to go out and see if the aux fan turns on...
Aux fan turns on with the ac, I'll probably wire a manual switch to that.
After looking I'm not sure if its an m42 radiator or not. It barely fits in the car and is currently not attached to anything. Where it's at now there really isn't room between the engine and radiator to put a fan.
I might be headed to a junkyard this weekend, hopefully I can find parts to mount the radiator.
Depending on the weather, the fan you got running will keep you mobile in the short term.
