I have a 1997 BMW 540i, everything was working well until I went for the Texas State Inspection. Afterward the "Check Rear Lights" came on. All of the lights, break, turn signals, and rear lights all work. Has anyone seen this before and if so, how can this be reset?
This is a common problem. First thing to check is the bulb bases and the sockets of the light housings. Clean them all well, with electrical contact cleaner and a cloth. Make sure all the bulbs are the correct type (check the owners manual), and have the proper nickel (silver colored) bases, NOT the brass colored bases. Yes, it makes a difference. The BMW bulb check system is very sensitive to bulb type, and you must use the ones with the nickel bases. The bulb packages will have markings stating they are ECE compliant or something like that.
Is this just from something they moved during the inspection? Is there a list somewhere that shows which lights generate the error message so I can check them all?
