Hi F10 community, we just traded in our 2013 X1 for a used 2011 550i. We had outgrown the little X1 and we wanted something bigger (and faster!). I was a regular poster in the X1 forum ("greyX1") but needed to re-register to change my username, so this is my first post in the forum. We bought a loaded dark graphite 2011 with extended warranty (44k miles) - I love it!
I had the BMS stage one unit on our X1 and loved it. I searched the forum and it looks like reactions are mixed. Terry is giving me a 20% discount so I'll be testing it out shortly. We are pretty close to the Dinan shop but I think I would rather tinker with the simple unit before slipping down the slippery slope of Dinan tunes.
We don't have the 70mph vibration I've read about, or the throttle tip-in issue that some F10 owners have (and that our X1 had). The rims and tires appear fine (no bulging, etc). It does pull slightly to the right. Our X1 did too, and so did a 535 I tested so I chalked that up to highway crown but possibly it really does pull to the right.
Steering felt much tighter than the 2011 535 I tested. But not as tight as a 2010 (E60) 550, or the 2013's. I guess they made some improvements. We do have the adaptive suspension with sport transmission, so maybe that is why it felt better than the 2011 535?
Couple of questions and thoughts to the 550 veterans on this forum:
1) Has anyone removed the soundproofing from the engine hood to increase the audibility of the wonderful N63? I'm tempted. Does it help protect the hood paint from the high engine temps?
2) Does anyone else have a bit of a whine from the transmission at low speeds (changes with RPM, audible with the window down). Not loud at all - I didn't notice it at all with the test drive.
3) I get an intermittent chatter at startup every now and then. Dealer said it was the valves self-adjusting. It's a CPO car so I'm not too worried but it's noticeable enough when it happens that I would be without the warranty. Does anyone else have this?
Thanks for any feedback or suggestions on service bulletins, etc... Excited to be joining the F10 community!
