My 2015 doesn't come with space saver spare tire. It runs on RTF. I am uneasy about not having a spare tire in case i am stuck in the middle of nowhere. Do you guys know the best place to buy the spare tire? Can I get the spare one from F70? Will it fit.
I found one on BimmerZone. Will this fit into the depression under the trunk?
any recommendation on non-donut wheel? I may just get a regular wheel + tire and leave it at home (only take it on a long trip). Do you guys know if F70 wheel fit on F15?

If I recall correctly, without the optional spare the area under the cargo floor is equipped with storage compartments that would preclude storing a spare tire there. I expect these storage compartments can be removed, perhaps easily, perhaps not, but once removed there still may not be the attachment point to fix the spare in place. You'll want to determine this if you plan on storing a spare in this location.
You can 'easily' remove the carpet liner. Then you need the tire and the post and clamp the holds the spare tire in place. The parts department tells me that the post/clamp are customer installable.
By the way, for those who did get the factory installed spare tire option -- is it full size spare or a smaller donut that can be used for 50 miles or less? Thanks,
We have the same concern that the OP expresses. We did decide to add the 3rd row seats, so no room for a compact spare. Part of that decision was the belief that the range of a punctured run flat could be extended with an aerosol repair and the addition of air with a 12volt compressor. We carry a jump start pack on long trips and it has a compressor. If we can keep the run flat inflated, the construction should not degrade and become non-repairable. With any luck we may never have to test the plan. Pat
Need to order the spare kit. It does not appear the kit on bimmerzone includes the post and clamp to secure in the car - can anyone confirm? Is that post/clamp really needed in the carpeted area?
Instead of an aerosol repair, make your first emergency option a tire plug. It makes a firm seal that can technically last forever, but it also doesnt mess up your rim and tpms with goop. A kit costs $7 or so.
I bought the space-saver spare for mine as I drive in very remote places, none of which likely stock a tire I'd need, and I also run non-runflats in winter tires. To answer the question above about the donut, yes, it is a reduced-size rim and tire. If anyone needs to see the space in which it sits (under the cargo cover) I'm happy to snap a photo.
We have the spare tire from the factory and I haven't paid a lot of attention to it but it definitely is not a spacesaver. I hope I never have to find out.
Ended up order the kit from Bimmerzone. It did not include the bolt used to secure in the car so I bought it from dealer (less than $20).
Mine was carpeted in that area so I left the carper in and cut a small hole in the carpeting from the bolt to attach body of the car. Took all of 5-10 minutes to install the spare and not going anywhere. No pics, sorry.
Still have space below the lid for other items besides the spare. Glad I did it - changing away from the runflats.
Step 1:
Remove the sleeping infant from the rear cargo area
Step 2:
Lift the cargo area cover to expose the spare tire area, spare tire and changing tools
Step 3:
Marvel in the odd-size of not-quite donut, not-quite full-size spare tire
Step 4:
One extra photo of the mount inside the spare to the floor for good measure
Thanks for all the well-wishes for my son! We're truly blessed to have him!
***EDIT TO ADD***: Sleeping infant pictured in step 1 did not ride in vehicle while in motion in this position (the wife made me post this disclaimer!)
Hey guys, thanks for all of the info. I'm just trying to get some clarification on how the Bimmerzone spare (below) fits into the trunk area of the F15. The X5 I'm looking at is carpeted in the trunk/cargo area, will this spare fit in there on it's own or will alterations need to be made? I've seen some folks mention adding a bolt to secure it, does anyone have any experience with this?
I have not added the spare tire kit to my X5, but I have done so in other cars. I'm assuming that you do not have a third row seat. Otherwise, the spare will not fit.
You should be able to place the compact spare on top of the carpet in very bottom of your cargo area. I suspect there is threaded metal bracket under your carpet that acts like a nut. If you want to secure your new compact spare, you could either pull back the carpet to verify the location of the tire hold down or if you cannot do that, you should be able to get a good estimate of its location after you place the spare in the trunk. Then, cut a small hole in the carpet to allow access to the threaded bracket (nut).
A dealer told me that the spare won't fit in that cargo area (no 3rd row), but perhaps he was referring to a different sized spare?
