Highly recommend spending an extra $15k to step up to a Cayenne. That was my decision recently. Touareg is really nice. Cayenne is definitely $15k nicer. Which model were you looking at?
Thanks for the insight, but I'm not big on the Cayenne exterior; first gen, yes, second gen, not so much. I understand they're built in the same factory, on the same chassis. Imagine a Porsche Exclusive (BMW Individual equivalent) Cayenne with Touareg sheet metal!?

We have one - a 2011 TDI. Nice SUV, no problems after a couple of initial quality problems that were widely reported when the new TDI powertrain was rolled out.
Things I like:
- range (>700miles per tank)
- roomy cabin, especially rear seats
- good infotainment system
- high quality interior, fit & finish
- great low end pull / towing capability
Things I don't like:
- it costs $100 to fill the tank...
- small cargo area
- some strange/clunky gear shifts during part load tip-out
- as is typical with TDIs, the low end pull is a tease, the engine quickly runs out of breath
- mediocre OEM all seasons and low ground clearance means it's nothing special for winter driving, my 550xi feels just as stable
Overall I highly recommend driving one, we preferred the Treg over the X5 & Mercedes. We hated the look of the Q7 so that wasn't an option, and couldn't stomach the $ to get an equally equipped Cayenne.

The Touareg's all seem to use the Aisin 8AT, I guess that means the Cayenne using it as well? I always figured they used the ZF, but looking through the NHTSA automobile labeling act report, it looks as if all three are using the Japanese sourced Aisin.
One thing that bothered me with VW is they do not back their own extended warranties, if you purchase one, it's administered by Fidelity. But the Touareg does come with a 10/100k powertrain warranty from the factory.
I kind have one - own a Porsche Cayenne. Thought the Cayenne was a much bigger step-up over the Touareg when we drove them back-2-back. There were a number of ergonomic things in the Touareg that I didn't care for. Like the styling much better. =)
Have a 2012 TDI Executive. Great SUV. We also took a look at the cayenne but also couldn't stomach the cost of the equally equipped cayenne. The TDI tows great and has a great range. It drives great. We went from a Ford Expedition. The TDI actually pulls our boat much better. On a negative note it does not have much storage. You will need to get a cargo box for the roof if you need to pack up more than two people's worth of stuff for a trip. We spend a lot of time up in the Truckee CA area and it drove great in the snow there with the stock tires.
We got a 2013 Cayenne for my wife around X-mas and have nothing bad to say about it. My wife loves it and it has been problem free. It feels pretty light and agile for an SUV, it's quite and competent for commuting, road trips, ski trips, hiking trips, IKEA ttrips etc. Very satisfied so far. It does have some body roll though so if you want sedan like cornering you will need to go with PDCC. Not sure if VW have a similar option.
We really considered one but ended up with an MDX.
German cars feel better, but they're smaller inside and my wife wanted three rows of seating and a more modern navigation system.
The Touareg is tight inside, but very well finished. The MDX has been incredibly reliable and was well-equipped for $48k (list) / $44k (purchase).
