I replaced the pads, rotors, and sensors about 5K miles ago. Reset the light and went along my merry way.
Yesterday the pad wear light came on. I know the pads aren't worn, so I have some sort of failure in a sensor.
Before I go tearing everything apart to check the sensors, is there any way to find out which sensor has tripped (by checking continuity somewhere upstream)? I figure either the sensor itself has come off the pad and made contact with the rotor causing it to break or the wiring connector in the wheel well has come loose. Any ideas on which is more probable?
I'm hoping I don't have to pull the calipers and rotors. If I remember correctly the sensors are on the inboard pads. Maybe I can get to them without pulling the rotors?
You can check with just removing the tire. Don't think the sensor could fall off and make contact with the disc, it needs to "peel off" the plastic coat before the metal contact is visible, and the sensor would just "hang in there".
I would check if they are securely in position and also check the connector in the box (behind the strut for the front) is also secure.
The wire for the right-rear sensor was hanging loose and rubbed the inside of the wheel which broke the wire. I guess I didn't clip it in properly when I installed it. I just cut the wire and shorted it to turn off the light. If I ever get bored I'll replace the sensor. With 90K on the car and brand new brakes, I'm not too worried about having a working brake pad sensor.
Time to replace the brake pads and rotors on my '05 X3 2.5i. I want to confirm the sensors? is there a schematic re: this sensor and does this need to be replaced too? any feedback is highly appreciated. thanks
If the light on your dash hasn't gone off, that means the sensors haven't tripped and don't need replacing. When the pad wears down enough, the sensor rubs the rotor and is broken, opening the wire and setting off the light. Once this happens, the sensor has to be replaced.
There are two sensor: front left and right rear. I replaced both of mine since I wasn't sure which of the two went off and they are pretty cheap anyway.
The mechanic I spoke to told me that the sensors needs replacing. But it has not tripped yet. Now my question is can a brake job get done and then just transfer the old sensors to the new one. Since it is placed (sensors) on the brake pads right?
X2.
Tell your mechanic to re-use them and save yourself $40.00. (He maybe just wants to charge you for them and leave the same sensors) Common tactic if you don't know...
