Once again the engineers put aluminum motor mounts holding the engine. I noticed a rough idle, then coolant leak at 100,000 miles. All 4 motor mounts sheared, leaving the engine hanging on the sub frame which took out the water pump. Will need 4 new bolts, $15, water pump, $600 and 6 hours labor, $700 to repair. This does not address any other damage caused down the road from the engine sitting on the frame bouncing around. Luckily I am retired and just use it to drive local, nothing aggressive or rough. How many issues like mine, and others, before a recall can be issued for this?:thumbdwn:
My 07 X3 just sheered about 3 weeks ago too, except I have 185k miles on mine. Both upper and lower engine mount brackets, plus water pump, $2k at dealership. Then two days later, something starts leaking; took it back to the dealership and find out that one of the washer pumps failed in the meantime.
Not just X3's either. 2008 328xi had the same problem. Luckily no other damage. There was a recall but it was only for the Z4 and one other model if I remember correctly. Didn't make much sense since it's the bolts that are the problem and the same bolts are on other models.
Do the 2007 X3s have run flat tires? With the 328xi I mentioned it had these really horrible run flats that had a very harsh ride. Any bump in the road sounded traumatic. We wondered if that was a contributing issue.
Take it to the BMW dealer and tell them you want the broken bolts back because you plan on sending them out for a material analysis. Within the hour I got a call from my SA saying they were doing this as a goodwill repair, I still asked about getting the broken bolts back and he says because they are doing it on their dime they are sending them to BMW NA for analysis.
