I've been working as a dismantler at a Porsche salvage yard for over a month now. I must say, from taking apart several cars now, it makes working on my E36 seem like a breeze. Porsches are nice cars too, but damn they sure know how to make some ****ed up designs. Some of you may already know this, but you lift the car off of the entire drivetrain. Or atleast thats the easiest way to do it. Its really a huge pita especially since most of the cars are going on 20-25 years old, 50% of the bolts break and round off. I have had a few porsches in my family (924,928,944) and they were a ton of fun to drive, but imho bmws are way better. Even though my boss loves porsches and drives one, even he will tell you that porsches are junk. If I do ever own a porsche its gonna be a 911. Although the parts can be quite a bit more than even a front engine car, its alot easier to work on/take apart. But for now, I'm sticking with bmw- The ultimate driving machine. They gave it that name for a reason. The 911's are known for their oversteer and you really have to be a great driver. We have tons of 911s that are wrecked/flipped because the drivers cant handle the car. If you go into a curve, you dont hit the brakes, you hit the gas or the ass end is coming around. Bmws are alot more forgiving. Alot more dependable..but of course if also depends on how the car has been taken care of. I've had alot of close calls- including hydroplanning. I felt the front end lift up when i hit a big puddle on the highway. The car swirved right towards the shoulder and I spun around sideways going about 70 and I managed to retain control of the car and kept on going. I know if it would have been any other car I would have lost it. Bmw is the ultimate driving machine- They might not be the fastet cars in the world. They might not be the most dependable cars on the road. They're not cheap cars to keep up. They are not set up for drag racing, although they're pretty good at it. They're not for everyone. They may not be alot of things, but BMW IS the Ultimate driving machine. Period.
ok. porsches are junk, the boss says huh? He must be talking about the 92s and 94s, and probably older 911s, but i think anyone willing to trash a boxter S, and 911 993, 996 and 997 just needs to get a perspective. Porsches rule, and the latest ones are absolutely amazing and I'd love to own a 911 997 Carrera 4S.
Ugh, you have no clue. Lol. He's the only one tho. There are some WRX's, Evo VIII/IX's, IS's, Si's, and a few E36's (of course M3's, so I have ///M envy, and one of them in Estoril on Dove....drool). But the guy with the 997 is very lucky. Before that, he owned a Lotus Exige, then a widebody 350Z, then the 4 month old Porsche [turns green with envy...drool].
I bought a 911 in Atlanta and drove it north along the Blue Ridge Parkway in late May, before summer vacation began so the road was almost deserted. I gradually learned that the road was engineered such that when I saw a hairpin turn, speed limit 25 sign, if I downshifted into 3rd and got it under 55 prior to entering the turn, I could accelerate through the turn just fine, FUN!
But when it was time to leave the Parkway near Washington DC, and I saw one of those hairpin turn signs on an access road, out of the corner of my eye, I saw the road going in the other direction about 50' to my right, OMG they really mean it this time. All that went through my mind (besides I'm gonna die wrapped around one of those trees) is that somebody had told me to NEVER brake in a turn or they'll swap ends(plus I'm an old VW beetle driver) so I hit the brakes HARD for the split second until I had to begin the turn, and then accelerated around that turn with the steering wheel turned WAY to the right. My 911 somehow held the road and suddenly I was a HUGE fan of that car and the Pirelli P800's that somehow held onto that road. It's a great car to drive, but NEVER brake in a turn! It was a fun car to have for a few years, but in Maine people tend look at you like you're a drug dealer when you're in one, so overall I prefer my "under the radar" E36.
I guess I should have posted this in the general forum, but this is the only forum I ever write in. Dont get me worng, I like porsches. I guess working on them and taking them apart everyday makes me not want one so much. I'd definately own a porsche, but they're definately not a pleasure to work on.Also, alot of people talk **** about the front engine cars. The 911 Turbo is hands down the king, but they were all great cars in their day. The 924 Turbo had near supercar specs in the early 80's. The 944 Turbo is a fast car too. I'd own one. The 928 was the fastest production road car back then. An early (85)928S4 recorded 172mph at the salt flats..my brother had an '84 928S2 and that thing-despite what anyone else says or thinks, was a beast. And the 968 had the biggest 4 cylinder engine ever made back then, a 3.0 making 240HP N/A. The front engine cars were near 50/50 weight dist. giving them better handling. I like all porsches, even the 914..we have a sick ass 914 widebody and personally I'd take that over a 911.I like all kinds of cars and I have respect for all kinds of cars. I think the E36 just fits me the best.
give me a bmw m1 or m6 anyday!
Wait till the new z10 comes out.... pwahaha
