This is a cross-post from the Wheel & Tire board. Figured there would be more Boston-based traffic here. Any recommendations would be appreciated...
I have an '08 335i with sports package and just noticed the telltale bubble on the sidewall of one of my RFTs. Knowing that i will have to get this replace, I'm curious if anyone knows of a shop in the Boston area that will 1) get me close to TireRack prices and 2) properly mount & balance RFTs. From what I've read, you really need to find the right shop with the right equipment or things could get ugly fast.
I would be curious to know also - last year I tried RIMPRO up in Tesksbury as they refinish most of the wheels for BMW dealers around the area and figured worst case senario they could fix the wheel if they screw it up. They told me they where getting the tire machine needed, but didn't have it yet and recommended the dealer as they usually get the wheels without tires from the BMW dealers when they repair them.
Dealer charged $50 a wheel to mount and balance without using their tires.
I had my tires replaced a few months ago at Hogan Tire (http://www.hogantire.com). They match internet prices for "similar service." What that means is that they'll match TireRack price and then charge you like $20 to mount each.
The one I went to was in Westwood. The guys there were nice to deal with. I inspected my rims after their work and found no damage. Of course, I'm just one data point so you might wanna do some more investigation before you go.
Btw, I also tried Town Fair Tire because they're closer and also matched TireRack prices. But after promising to order the tires I wanted, I called the day I was going in to confirm and the guy forgot about it and didn't even remember I was coming in. Then he said that there would be a long wait time and tried to steer me to other brands. I have a feeling that the TireRack prices were too low for them so they lied to me to get me to buy their other stuff. Again, I'm just one data point but it was really fishy.
I hadn't heard of Hogan before. Might be a good option. I'm going to try the old standby, Direct Tire. The problem I had with them in the past is that tires are incredibly expensive relative to TireRack. They do good work though. I will see if they will at least approach the on line price.
I always go to the Goodyear in Somerville, near Somerville Ave. I just purchased a set of F1 all-seasons recently there with the lifetime warranties on them. I previously posted that I had to replace a tire already due to our sh1te roads here, and got it done for just the warranty price of $20 for the new tire, and tire was free. Excellent service there, been going there since '01.
