I searched the forums, but I couldn't find anything that sounded like my problem. I saw a bunch of threads on rough idle, but I couldn't find anything that looked useful to me, so if this has been discussed before, my apologies.
So, about a week or two ago, my car started idling rough. Not bad, I didn't even notice it at first - it wasn't until yesterday and I started thinking back on it that I realized what was happening last week.
Then yesterday, I got in the car and started it, and for about ~20 seconds, it idled really rough. It didn't act like it was going to die, but the RPMs were all over the place. I'm not getting any codes, and after about the first 20 seconds, the car runs perfectly.
I'll try to get a video of it today when I leave for work, but I wanted to go ahead and post this just in case anyone had any ideas.
Well, of course it won't do it now. I pulled some stuff off, but then realized I didn't have the right tools - but when I put it back together, it seems to be running better...
Oh well, when it starts acting crazy again, I'll give it another shot.
i'm also having a rough idle at startup, the RPM sometimes plays all over the place for around 20 sec, but most of the time as soon as i start it up, it reaches 1100 RPM, drops to 900 RPM then goes back up to 1100 until it warms up. but i still feel a bit of stuttering until the temp reaches mid-way (normal hot temp), after then everything goes back to normal.
plugs changed around 3 months ago :dunno:
i hope we all have the same prob
My car has been like that since Day One....I just chalk it up to the ZHP`s hotter cams....it`s a little cold-blooded, like an air-cooled motorcycle. Doesn`t really bother me though....these are PERFORMANCE cars fer Chrissakes....if they didn`t have a few little quirks, I`d think there was something wrong with `em....
That's kinda how mine started out. It wasn't bad, but I had to let it warm up for about 10 seconds before I could take off, otherwise it would kinda hesitate. Not good for trying to pull out in traffic real quick.
Now, If I haven't driven it in the past 12-24 hours, I have to let it warm up for at least 60 seconds before I can get going, and even then it take a good 4-5 minutes to be at 'normal'. After that, though, it runs perfectly fine (as far as I can tell, I guess there could be something going on that I'm not noticing).
I cleaned the ICV. It wasn't too awful, but I could tell a big difference in the mechanism inside moved a lot easier with it being clean. I think I might have found the primary issue, though the big f*cking rip in the upper boot.
Quick question - should I clean the throttle body while I have everything pulled out?
All I have on hand is carb and choke cleaner and MAF cleaner - which do you think would be best for the TB? I'm guessing carb and choke would be okay?
EDIT: Okay, just used the carb cleaner. I guess it worked fine - the car still runs
Anyway, between using half a roll of electric tape on the massive tear in the boot and cleaning the ICV, the problem seems to be fixed. It's idling perfectly fine now - just waiting on the new boot to come in.

Did you try sealing your DISA? They can suck unmetered air when the plastic is cold and then as the engine warms up and the plastic expands, it seals the leak and the engine runs better.
Try changing the o-ring on your DISA or sealing with a non-setting RTV and see if that helps.
Hi all, thanks for letting me join and please help if you can....? I have an E46 M3 (2003) SMG with 54,000 on the clock and full service history including the running in service. My problem is that my car idles rough CONSTANTLY but with no EML light or others and with no problems AT ALL regarding performance...?? :thumbdwn: I submitted it to my local BMW specialist who told me that the error codes were : all six cylinders misfiring........So his first port of call was to encourage me to invest in a £160 Timing chain tensioner bolt.......with NO change, so he then told me that the next job was to spend £2000 on a timing chain kit......!! guess what, i haven't yet as i don't know if its worth wasting that much on a hunch...! so my question is does anyone have any ideas on what i could try first CHEAPER than potentially wasting £2k on unnecessary repairs.....? If anyone has any GEMS of advice i would be really grateful as i love my M3 but can't handle it being a "Nail" Many thanks, Pete

Hi guys.
If I read this problem properly, you have an issue with rough idle for maybe twenty seconds upon first startup then it settles down and runs fine? If that's right, I just fixed this problem on my car. I have an 04 ZHP coupe, 6mt and my ses light came on. Got codes P0171 and P0174. Lean. I went sleuthing around, looking for vacuum leaks. Replaced the air filter, cleaned the MAF and with it out, noticed an irregularity in the convoluted part of the boot beyond it. When I took the boot out, it was visibly torn in more places than I could count. I guess that idle ranging around at startup was the engine trying to adapt to this leaky condition and to its' credit, after twenty seconds or so, got it done. In retrospect, I am impressed that it could. I have had several cars that ran badly on lesser leaks. Anyhoo, the dealer had the boot on the shelf for $37. Replaced it (maybe 20 minutes work) and my startup is back to perfectly level. Hope this helps.
