I'm happy when I average 16 mpg with a mixed commute. I drown out the sound of the gas pump by running sounds of a V8 through my head...and I never get a receipt to remind me of what I've just done.
I currently am at 21.9 average over the last two tanks of gas. Mixed back road and I95 commute to work (40 miles) with some stop and go Route 1 traffic mixed in for fun.
According to the display in the dash, I'm currently averaging 22.8 mpg in mostly highway driving, but a lot of it in heavy stop and go traffic. But, when I do the math and divide the miles driven by the gallons used, I find I'm averaging about 20 to 21 mpg. It seems to me that the mileage display in the car is a bit optimistic. Anybody else see this?

That's exactly what I see. I'm consistently from tank to tank between 21.5 and 22.6 mpg according to the display. Actual math is more like 18.5 - 20.5, based on my fuel logs that I keep.
Back when I picked my 2008 550i up back in Sept '10, I drove down from San Francisco area in my 330i down Highway 5 with Cruise Control set at 80 mph. Got 28 mpg. I traded in the 330i for the 550i, and using the same route with cruise control set at 80, I achieved an honest 25 mpg. Amazing. Around town with mixture of some highway/city driving, I routinely achieve around 18 mpg, and that's with rowing the sportmatic gears and having fun on the highway. I've been pleasantly surprised with miles. I have noticed that mpg does seem to drop in these winter months when just doing some short drives.
Commute is 87 miles one way through the LA slog. Girl friend gets 21 mpg, I get 17. Same stop and go 3.5 hour grind. Driving nearer the house, I only get 12.5 mpg, she still manages 18-19 mpg. Of coarse its her car but I drive it like I own it.
15.5mpg 90% city/suburb driving and 10%highway. manual trans but I don't know if that has anthing to do with it.. But does gas mileage really matter when we have $70,000 cars?
I drive 30K miles plus per year,... that is why I drive the 535... not the power of the 550, but 25-28 mpg average, so about 1500-2000$ savings per year just in fuel cost...
That is also why my wife drives the 4.8L... She is lucky to average 14 mpg in town...
that's what my husband keeps saying, but I'd rather limit the amount of time I spend at the gas station. I took an M3 on an extended test drive last week, and had to put $10 in it just to go home and back to the dealer.
Don't trust the on-dash MPG, it's never right (at least it isn't for me). My first few tanks were less than 15 (lots of sport, flooring it out of stoplights), but now I'm up in the 17-18MPG range.
For those of you getting over 20, if you aren't 100% FW, then YOU'RE DRIVING TO SLOW!!!
