As a new Steptronic user in my '08 535i, I am still baffled why BMW chose to put "Park" between Neutral and Drive. I am always afraid I am going to mess up one day and shift it into Reverse instead of Park.
Question:
1: Do you hit P before you shut off the engine?
2: Do you shut off the engine (it automatically goes into P)?
3: Have you put in into Reverse by mistake?
On straight and level ground, I push the engine start/stop button for 2 seconds and it will shut down everything and put it in Park.
On uphill/downhills, I put the car in neutral first, then I apply the handbrake, then I take my foot off the brake and make sure the car won't roll on neutral w/ the handbrake applied, THEN I push the start/stop button for 2 seconds to shut everything down and put it in park
I dislike the new shifter. I was giving an 08 528i with one, and it wasn't comfortable. I like my 07,s much more. Even the bottom base trim looks tacky in silver. I didn't care for the door panels much either. I did like the way the climate controls pop up on the idrive when you touch a climate control knob on the dash.
I agree on the look - I find it to be too much plastic and like the old design better. Which is kind of odd since I like the extra applications of rubber/leather to the idrive knob and the climate control knobs (or was that pre-LCI?). (I've actually been considering ordering the iDrive knob since I liked it so much better than my silver painted one).
I had a 08 528xi loaner - it was obvious enough when parking to not put it into reverse - my worry was that I almost put it in drive when I wanted to go into reverse. (But caught it - so I would imagine that its not actually that likely unless you switch back and forth between cars) It does kind of make sense - in that you are really putting the car in neutral and then engadging park.
