Woah!? Isn't the boiling point of water alone entirely too low?? How are you not building massive amounts of pressure blowing hoses and rad necks to smithereens?.. Really might need an education on this subject as I didn't know straight water was possible on newer vehicles..
Water under pressure, as it is in your car's cooling system, has a higher boiling point than water at atmospheric or 'sea level' pressure. Most cars run at a temperature of around 190-200*F, which is below the boiling point of water under pressure.
Plain distilled water is actually better at transferring heat than anti-freeze. You can Google it yourself if you don't believe me.
Anti-freeze does exactly what the name implies; it prevents the water from freezing below 32*F. It also has anti-corrosion and lubricant additives as mentioned above. During the summer you can run plain distilled water with a bottle of RedLine Water Wetter and not adversely affect your cooling system. You just have to drain and add anti-freeze when the cold weather comes, if you live in that type of climate.
For the limited price difference I would splurge and use the BMW branded coolant. I just spent 50 bux for a gallon of coolant for my Porsche (yes my p-car is mid engine and sadly uses coolant). It's not worth risking it to save a few bucks! My e36 just got some generic green stuff. With 249k on the clock it will be lucky to see another coolant flush...if it does I will go back to OEM fluid.
Bigger issue IMO is using tap water vs distilled. Lots of service shops cheap out when it comes to the water mixed. Premix green is better than bmw fluids with tap water!

your right be, the mechanical aspect of the problem could and will grant the use for strait up garden hose water,
to much though process being spent on this and not (fuel) injection
