BMW's return to DTM Racing

The BMW M3 DTM completed its maiden laps at the BMW test premises in Aschheim (DE) on 4th July 2011. A good 15 months and one season later, Bruno Spengler's (CA) title in the drivers' standings, the triumph for BMW Team Schnitzer in the team competition, and victory in the Manufacturers' Championship capped a dream comeback season.

15th October 2010
During the final DTM race weekend in Hockenheim BMW Motorsport officially announces its return to the series for the 2012 season.

4th July 2011
Roll-out at the BMW test site in Aschheim (DE). The BMW M3 DTM leaves the garage for the first time with Augusto Farfus (BR) at the wheel.

6th/7th July 2011
The BMW M3 DTM completes its first test program in Oschersleben (DE).

15th July 2011
The BMW M3 DTM Concept Car is officially presented as part of the DTM show event in Munich (DE). The car is revealed to the public for the first time at BMW Welt.

12th/13th September 2011
The BMW M3 DTM meets the opposition for the first time - at the joint test with all the manufacturers represented in the 2012 DTM at the Lausitzring (DE).

23rd October 2011
The BMW M Performance Parts M3 DTM takes to the track for a series of demonstration laps at the finale of the 2011 DTM season in Hockenheim (DE).

13th January 2012
All the BMW M3 DTM seats are taken. Dirk Werner (DE) is confirmed as the sixth driver - alongside Andy Priaulx (GB), Augusto Farfus (BR), Bruno Spengler (CA), Martin Tomczyk (DE) and Joey Hand (US).

1st March 2012
BMW Motorsport submits the documents for the homologation of the BMW M3 DTM to the Deutscher Motor Sport Bund (DMSB). From this point, no further modifications can be made to certain key areas on the car.

22nd April 2012
The calm before the storm: the BMW M3 DTM thrills fans at the official DTM Presentation in Wiesbaden (DE).

29th April 2012
The BMW M3 lines up at the opening race of the DTM season for the first time for almost 20 years. BMW makes a successful return, with Andy Priaulx finishing sixth in the Crowne Plaza Hotels BMW M3 DTM. 142,000 spectators in Hockenheim witness the start of a new DTM era.

6th May 2012
The BMW Bank M3 DTM and Bruno Spengler, who started from pole position, present BMW with its 50th DTM victory at the Lausitzring. BMW is back on the top step of the podium just two races into its comeback season. Farfus is third.

20th May 2012
Another strong result in Brands Hatch (GB): after 97 laps Bruno Spengler crosses the finish line in second place. Martin Tomczyk sets BMW's first fastest lap of the comeback in a time of 42.138 seconds.

14th/15thJuly 2012
When the DTM visits Munich's Olympic Stadium, the fans are able to experience the BMW M3 DTM in action not far from its birthplace.

19th August 2012
Bruno Spengler returns from the summer break to claim his second win of the season in the scorching heat at the Nürburgring (DE). Starting from pole position, he comes home with a comfortable lead and also sets the fastest race lap of 1:25.185 minutes. Martin Tomczyk finishes third to round off a great result as BMW M celebrates its 40th anniversary.

16th September 2012
Third pole and victory number three for Spengler and BMW Team Schnitzer. The Canadian comes out on top in a hard-fought duel with Gary Paffett (GB, Mercedes) in Oschersleben. Dirk Werner comes home in fourth to record his best DTM result so far, just ahead of Augusto Farfus in fifth.

30th September 2012
Augusto Farfus makes history in Valencia (ES), becoming the first Brazilian ever to win a DTM race. He leads from pole to finish to secure the first victory for BMW Team RBM. Bruno Spengler sets the fastest race lap in a time of 1:27.116 minutes.

21st October 2012
Bruno Spengler comes home ahead of Gary Paffett to win a dramatic final race of the season and emerge victorious from the direct duel for the drivers' title. Augusto Farfus finishes third from pole. BMW Team Schnitzer wins the team competition courtesy of Spengler's triumph and fifth place for Dirk Werner. With Andy Priaulx and Joey Hand also finishing in the points, BMW is also able to move up to first place in the Manufacturers' Championship. The icing on the cake at the end of an incredible comeback season that produced a hat-trick of titles. To cap it all, Farfus is the best rookie of the season.
