How long is the lifetime? Will there be a 2018 F30?

From a driver's experience, what is being given up by not having to B48 320i?

A bit of power and fuel economy. New motor is a bit quieter with less of the sewing machine diesel sound.

'TU' transmission is the second generation 8HP50 tranny that debuted on the F10 520d in 2014.

This is great info. The "TU" reference still does not ring a bell but some details might have been skipped.

No. Standard product cycle: 4 years initial model, 3 years LCI.

Wasn't the E90 introduced as a 2006 with LCI in 2009? 6 year life?

Model years in BMW terms are different from calendar years.

The E90 showed up in mid 2005 as a MY2006 and was a 18-month run as a MY2006. By the time the MY2009 showed up in September 2008 the E90 was already 3+ calendar years but with 4 model years.

In all, the E90 was a little over a 6-calendar year run with 6 model years and the last model year was actually split in three releases based on significant updates (2011, 2011.5, and 2011.75).

No problem namelessman; "TU" is a rather obscure suffix that ZF Friedrichshafen AG (and BMW as well) uses to describe the second generation updates to the 8HP transmission.

I think it's an abbreviation that in the German language stands for Technischen Überarbeitung, which translates to 'technical revision' in English.

Fixed some details in the original post.

The F30 has not followed any of the past BMW model year traditions. The F30 LCI showed up 3.5 calendar years after introduction already with 5 model years in instead of 4. That is the reason the LCI will only have 3 model years of duration instead of the traditional 4 model years.

MY17 340i now has M sport package as standard for additional $2k bump of base MSRP. The package includes:

"M Sport Suspension, M Sport Steering Wheel, Aerodynamic Kit, Shadowline Trim, and Increased Top Speed Limiter (not on xDrive models)"

This sounds like a good deal.

Should've mentioned "(not on xDrive models)" twice.

Good catch, the 2017 list of changes misses the clarification on M sport suspension.
