So it seems folks who just took delivery of their F10 M5s didn't have the European maps
preloaded on their NAV systems but got a USB stick instead. This also meant the USB port
was occupied and one couldn't use their iPods for music streaming. Only blootooth
streaming works.
I was just wondering if this is really the case or just a "fluke" of the first batch of M5s delivered ??
Thx so far !
That's all fine but it's still not great for those with recent/current Android phones and a large music library (ie no snap in adapter available) which doesn't fit onto the phone
Hopefully the music import feature will work and I can upload music from my iPod/hard disk...
Do the M5's have the updated nav system? I took delivery of my 335 on Sept. 7 and it does have the Euro maps loaded. I was discussing the new nav system with the BMW rep and he said an advantage of having the old system is that the maps were preloaded instead of on a USB stick, so I would still be able to connect my phone through USB.
Per a VERY reliable source in Welt, I was told that MY13 7 Series and 3 Series Wagon come with an updated systems... all others are the same as before.
The MY13 M5s do have the updated system too (updated processor/HDD/video etc) and I hope
it was just the first batch which didn't have the maps loaded.
I've sent mail to the BMW ED folks but haven't heard anything back yet
Picked up my 550 two days ago; it is indeed using a USB stick for Euro maps (setup at delivery). I never used the 'old' system, but this one seems very quick and (so far) has provided excellent directions.
Gotta say, the Welt and delivery experience was incredible!!
When we took delivery Sept. 13th, 2012, Guido our delivery guy went and got the USB stick and said he needed to download the maps into the Nav system and that the stick with the nice BMW logo would be our souvenir. Then he started up the Nav and noticed that the European maps were already loaded. So then I asked, do I get to keep the stick? He went and asked and the answer was no since they would need it for another delivery. Pretty cheezy response as he had already grabbed it for our car. It wasn't worth getting worked up over.
Another data point.... ED on 8/31 of a '13 535 GT, used the USB-based European maps. Only one USB port on the car now, so the maps got the port. Maps were more important than "driving blind" while waiting for my music library to load from it's USB stick...
Oh well, not a material issue in the scheme of things...
Ditto on what SimiClyde said. Question...did anyone try touching the nav screen to move the map? My daughter and I kept trying, but it's not an iPad, damn it.
Sept 4 delivery of E92, and it had euro maps installed. I also got a flash drive with BMW logo that had the delivery picture on it. Did those complaining about not getting the to keep the flash drive not get one with their delivery pic?
Yes the reason some don't get Europe maps pre-loaded is that BMW can't pre-load maps (Euro) on cars equipped with the new / updated navigation system 609 (F10 5 Series Sedan/Gran Turismo, 7 Series Sedan and ActiveHybrid 3) .
All other cars still have the "old" navigation system and will/should have the euro maps pre-loaded.
Also the cars fitted with the new nav system will only have one USB connector in the middle console, the one
in the glovebox has been removed.
One thing worthwhile trying might be to see if a Y cable/spliter might work for the USB stick and iPod (unlikely).
I decided to buy the media adapter for my iPod Touch so I have music and maps (also note the Media snap-in adapter is the only one working with the new nav system, the "music" snap-in adapter does not work, the media adapter will require some light tweaking in order to make the iPod Touch work (it's smaller/shorter than the iPhone) .
With you filling in the blanks. Guido our delivery guy assumed that their flagship 6 Series Gran Coupe would have the updated nav and therefore would need the USB stick. Would be a good assumption except reading this thread, it would be incorrect. Thanks for clearing up the mystery. We'll have to wait until our next go around. The old nav seemed fine but it does frustrate me, being a tech geek and all.
Picked up our 7 last week and yes BMW provided a USB stick (BMW logo) for the maps in Europe. It occupied the USB slot in the middle console. The USB drive is over 30GB but the maps take about 23GB of space. And yes, it is only for Europe. The stick becomes a nice 30GB drive for you to use in the States.
Any update on this issue of preloaded maps v. UBS. If I understand correctly, my MY13 335 (expected May prodection / April delivery) will have the old nav (or is there any chance it will get the upgrade by then), and if if does I will have pre-loaded maps. I guess either way I am glad that the old school method of renting map disk from beewang is no longer necessary
Either way it's not a problem.
If someone has the new NAV system the maps will be pre-loaded on a USB stick and this stick will occupy the USB slot under the center console armrest .
Only drawback is that one can't use the USB port for audio/iPod whilst the maps are loaded (the new NAV system no longer has an additional USB port in the glove box)
So you have to use the media/phone snap-in adapter or Bluetooth streaming if you want to play your own music/playlists
I took delivery of my Z4 on Oct 9. Drove through Europe with no issues. Got my car back in the states and have been driving with no issues here either.
I did not get a USB drive for maps and I did not have to do anything special - just picked up my car and that's it.
Yes . Because the Z4 is still using the "old" NAV system/
Maps loaded via the USB stick are ONLY needed if your car has the new NAV system
