In my 07 X3 i start the car and without applying the gas or anything else in/on the car, the idle is fluctuating up and down. The RPMs dont really reflect the difference but you can hear it clearly. I have been having a service engine soon light coming on occasionally which is the code P0015. The first time it came on i had the crank shaft sensor replaced and yet its still coming on roughly every 2-3 weeks for only hours then goes back off.
Does anyone have any insight on what the next step should be, FYI, 59k miles, no warranty.
Does the engine seems like it wants to die but catches itself? Also does the fluctuating idle go away after the car is warmed up? If the problem disappears after warming up I suggest /suspect an issue with the seals on the Double Vanos system. It seems many of the dealers (ok the 2 near me and reading reports of similar stories on the message boards) are not away of this and/or don't acknowledge the issue and want to always change crank sensors, crank vacuum seals, and idle pulleys, etc. From my understanding the engine Double Vanos and the management systems in the X3 are substantially similar to the e46 3 series. There are many discussions of this on e46 Fanatics and on the e46 discussions here. However, I don't remember codes being thrown all the time. FYI, my former e46 3 series had the stumbling idle when cold and the dealer changed almost every sensor they could think of with no success...only after showing them many discussions of the DV seals wearing did they change that, and it solved the problem.
