I am ready to buy my next 5 series. Own an 01 530i & 06 530xi.
I am excited about the new 08 models and had my sights on the new 08 535i based on what I wanted to spend and the increased power, however I noticed that my dealers in the area still has some 07 550i in stock and were discounting them anywhere from a meager $1,500 off MSRP to a more decent $3,000 off MSRP with no negotiations yet.
The possiblity of owning a 550i is very enticing and a dream of mine. I am just trying to figure out if the discount is good enough off an 07 550, should I go for it since the 08's (535 & 550) at this time will either be at MSRP or have little discounts?
I plan on purchasing this vehicle with a trade in, so not leasing. I know I will take a depreciation hit if I buy a 07 when the 08 are already out, but hopefully the discounts in the end will somewhat offset that depreciation hit?
I am also fully aware that the 08 550i has a great looking Aero-Kit and a host of refreshments to the interior and exterior, but the engine is still the same and the 08 at least is not a TOTAL REVAMP, but either way an 07 550i to me is still exciting!
My fellow BMW friends, what would you do in this case? I would rather get an 07 or 08 550 over a 535i, but the 535i is still more in my price range. Your comments would be much appreciated.
(on a side note, the dealer also has some loaded 07 550i CPO with 7,000 to 10,000 miles on them which could also be even better deals if I go used).
If it were me...I would wait for the 08 in your case. The sport kit is awesome, especially the wheels and aero kit. I unfourtunatly already had my ED placed, tickets bought and everything else when the details of the 08 were released, so I was stuck with the 07. Now don't get me wrong...don't get me wrong at all...I LOVE my new car, even as I wait for re delivery. But, if I had a choice between the two now...I would wait for the 08!
I was also the one who started the 08 Sport Package too Bling & Pimpin thread, but as I get to see more photos I like the sport kit more and more. I saw an M5 on the road today and it didn't look all tricked out, it looked nice and clean. The 19" wheels are cool too, so maybe an 08 is the way to go, eventhough the discounting will be minimal.

Thanks again. I actually posted their earlier and wanted to also find out what my fellow bimmerfest members were thinking too. Thanks again for the link.

either will be great. for gas mileage go for the 535 or the 550 with a manual. i know the auto show higher mpg but in city driving the manual is better. but the auto is a better stop and go.
Turns out most of the 07s on the lot are fully loaded with features that I usually would not need, so even with the larger discount, the price is as still close to a new 08 550i that I custom order that has less options. The answer seems to be more obvious now to go with an 08 550i with a little discount.
Anyone getting better than $1K off MSRP for a 08 550i?
IMHO, 2008 550 no question. Just wait a little bit if you can. In 3-4 months they will be discounting 550s a lot. By that time most car magazines will find 535 to be equally fast if not faster than 550 and BMW will have to compensate $8K difference by significantly discounting 550.
I have purchased my last 5 cars this way, and I usually find a good deal out there. Granted, you have to be willing to accept some tradeoffs, but you can usually get most of what you want.
My most recent acquisition is a 07 550i 6 speed. It had 6,200 miles, one owner in near perfect shape. I paid $16,500 less than sticker. I bought my E39 540i, E39 M5 and S54 M Roadster under the same scenario. Oh yeah, bought my wife's 2002 Lexus SC430 too. Don't be afraid to buy used.
AeroKit and new wheels are only for the 550i sport package.
The new 535i sport will look like the old 07 550i with the same rims and tires. You can always still get the Aerokit for the 535i as an factory accessory.
Earlier this week I have placed my order for an 08 550i Sport, Nav, Premium Sound & Steptronic. It was actually only a little more than if I had to get an leftover 07 that all happenned to be fully loaded with other options I did not need. The dealers here in SOCAL would either not discount off a new 08 550i, so I finally got one to give me at least $1K off MSRP for this customer order.
ETA is beginning of may and I can't wait!
Also they would only give me $13K for my 2001 530i that has only 46K miles, so I have to see if Carmax will give me more for it. Funny how cheap it is not, but then I realize that it's 7 years old! Time flies and BMWs always remain a classic.
there is a difference if you plan on leasing. if that's the case, and you have a two month time frame, the 2007 is a no brainer.
