Its my cousins 2006 X3. She asked me to test drive it to compare how it drives w/ my wifes '05. She said two days back she started the car and it idled funny, shaking and almost died. The SERVICE ENGINE light went on, shut and started the car twice and the light went off. Car idled normal but she says something feels wrong. So tonight i did a test drive and it ran funny. From 1st gear it would shift to second then i would feel a hesitation on the engine at about 6-7K RPM just before it shifts into 3rd. Drove it a couple more blocks and sometimes it would happen from 1st shifting to 2nd. Would it be the transmission? It runs and pulls strong, doesnt seem to be slipping. To describe it, it feels like its gasping for air before it shifts. Bad gas maybe? Tom shes gona drop the car off, i want to check the air filter or anything i might be able to diagnose. What do you guys think?
Find out what the check engine code was. Even though the light has gone out the code is still stored. The codes won't always tell you the exact problem but will help point you in the right direction. Codes can either be active or stored with stored meaning the problem occurred and then hasn't hit again.
