Question shifter slips into neural?

Hello all....

I have had my 2001 X5 3.0i automatic for about 8 months now with no issues - other than that bloody MIL - but I was stopped at a light a few days ago, and as I reached over to the passenger side I bumped the shifter with my arm, and it went into neutral. I can move it back and forth from neutral/drive easily without using the detent button.

I can also do this while driving at pretty much any speed (I tried). Is this normal? It doesn't seem like a good thing to me.

Thanks for any input

On my '04, I can only bump it into neutral from drive only. Going from neutral to drive requires the brake pedal to be pressed.
