Remember, the dealer does not have to give you the base rate.
It is always best to compare other sources.
You can do this through LeaseCompare.com.

What month do lease rates typically go down, or what month are 39mo terms introduced? I'm wondering if July might be better than June or if I would have to wait until like September or October for that

Rates (money factors) generally follow market rates. So if anything they will be on the rise, unless BMWFS offers a subsidized rate to move certain cars. Residual values will continue to fall as the year goes on unless they are subsidized.

Residual values will continue to fall...

[QUOTE=Residual values will continue to fall as the year goes on unless they are subsidized.[/QUOTE]

Tarry,

I can certainly understand that everything else being equal, a car would have a higher residual value after 36 months than after 48 months; but I don’t quite get why a car leased this month would have a higher residual than another car to be leased in August, again assuming everything else being equal.

Is that what you mean when you say “Residual values will continue to fall as the year goes”?

A couple of other questions:

1. Is it BMWFS or the dealer that sets the acquisition fee as well as the disposition fee? If it’s the former, would you be able to publish the data on these fees? If the latter, do they vary greatly from dealer to dealer? And are they negotiable?

2. Assuming that a car to lease will never be totaled or stolen, does it make sense to put down as much down payment as one can afford to reduce the rent charges? More importantly, is there a maximum cost reduction amount one can put down? If so, who sets the maximum, BMWFS or dealer?

Thanks in advance for your insights.

Vehicle residual values normally drop each month as they get older. BMFS sets fees but the dealer can mark them up. I'll see if I cna post that data with the next update. There is no real value in putting money down as you will still be taxed on it. Some lenders have a maximum of 20% down. I'm not sure what BMFS limits are. It would be determined by BMFS and not the dealer.

Looking at the March, April and May vs June programs..the MF's on an X3 have stayed the same and the residual has increased 1%. That seems odd because a 2005 X3 bought in March will be worth more in March 2008 than a 2005 X3 bought in this month in June 2008..

Either they need to start offering more incentives on 2005's now, or they need to stop offering them so early in March

Sometimes ALG (Automotive Lease Guide) will raise residuals if they were intially set too low or if they believe the vehicles has a stronger resale value.

You'd be shocked to see what actually happens in the used car market for many of these cars. Case in question: You'd expect a 2002 325i coming off lease in March 2005 to be worth more than one coming off lease in June 2005. In reality, even though the new model is out, May and June are two of the strongest months at the used car auctions (at least up here in the Northeast), and these cars actually went up in value (in some cases several THOUSAND dollars) over those two months. Cars that were selling for $18,000-20,000 in March sold in June for $21,000-23,000. Yes, you got that right... at the BMWFS sale at Manheim a few weeks ago, BMWFS actually had 2002 325i's selling north of $23,000, with most of the clean cars with decent equipment levels falling in the $21,000-22,000 range.

Sometimes reality goes against what you would expect to happen.
