Anyone know weight limit for front passenger airbag?

Okay- I was in the passenger seat of our new 325i with sport package. The light saying the front passenger airbag was disabled was illuminated most of the time. I will mostly be in the passenger seat since my husband has "claimed" this car and I am wondering if at 107 lbs I will not have an airbag for protection in the front. Can the sensor be retooled? I am 5 feet, 4 inches, so I would think I would be tall enough not to trigger the airbag to turn off.

That light only comes on if the switch to TURN OFF the passenger airbag has been flipped.

Okay- so where is the switch? I'll look it up. When I looked in the owner's manual, all it said was not to sit in the front seat if the light was on. Yeah- like I'll fit in between the two carseats in the back seat!

OH- I do have a sister, she's married, has 18-month-old twins and weighs quite a bit more than I do- genetics is a crazy thing! Besides- I see you are a perinatologist (boy, have I had more experience there than I wanted) and you ought to have no problem finding a woman with good "stats"

Haha...I've a friend who is about the same size but cannot fit between the infant base and the car seat. She had to sit on the car seat and look like a 6"6' tall lady seating behind me...

my girlfriend is 5'3" and the airbag off light comes on every once in a while. She moved her foot one time, and it turned off.

I don't know about the E90. On the Z4 it's located in between the door hinges on the passenger side. You will need to insert the car key and TURN to physically turn off the passenger side airbag.

Okay- so I don't want to turn off the airbag- I want it to work when I am in the passenger seat. The car is at the dealer today getting the front bumper replaced as it arrived with a dimple- so we are having them check out the light as well.

I'm confused. Is it a light on the dash board that says "airbag," or a light that says "airbag OFF?"

The first light that says just airbag, it means one of your sensor has gone haywire. The second light, airbag off, means someone has turned off your passenger side airbag and can be turned on by reading your owner's manual and finding the switch that turns it back on.

So which is it?

It's a "smart airbag" it turns off if it senses a child in the front seat or a rear facing safety seat. So- my question is- do I qualify as a child at 5 foot 4 inches and 107 lbs? The light is by the interior lights in the front center of the car and only illuminates if it senses something/someone in the front seat that it doesn't think should have an airbag (e.g. a little kiddo).

Oh- and I don't carry a purse obmd- but maybe I should start and see if that fixes it...

I ran a search on the passenger airbag light and came upon this old thread. I have a similar problem. My son, who is almost 10 years old, just under 5' tall and weighs about 75 lbs, likes to sit in the front seat. I don't think its safe for him with the airbag on, so I was happy to read about the auto sensing airbag, and that it would turn off if a small person was in the seat. However, the light only comes on when I start the engine, then it goes out. How do I know if the airbag is not engaged? It does the same thing if nobody is in the seat, if he is in the seat or if a full size adult is in the seat.

Should I take it in to the dealer to look at it?

TIA,

Mike

My 13 year old weighs in at about 112 to 114 lbs. Light has not come on with him in the seat. I would get it checked out. Anyone knwo the answer to the original question (regardless what the car and the sensor's think!) as to what weight the air bag should be armed?

With ~112lbs, the light should NOT come on (ie airbag on).

Actually, if the light is off, the airbag is on. The light says "passenger airbag off" That is the problem. Under a certain weight, I'm guessing less than 125lbs or so, the light should come one, but it doesn't and that worries me.

Oops! I try correct njfred, but make mistake myself. I edit and correct it now.

But, 125lbs should be heavy enough to have the airbag on (light off).

Mike... in re-reading your post.. if a recall correctly, my airbag light behaves just like yours. Manual is confusing and does not really clear up things.

Dealer just called and said that he thought the weight trigger to activate the airbag is at 105 lbs. Further he said the light should come on and stay on when the airbag is deactivated (anything under 105 lbs). Mine does not stay on when no one is in the seat so he said to bring it in and they will take a look at it. It is likely a software issue

Thanks njfred. I will do the same, as my light does not stay on, and my son definately weighs under 105.
