Dorsal Fin

Do all E90's have the dorsal fin (shark fin) on the roof? Or do you need premium package or sat prep in order to get it?

I was under the assumption all 3 series regardless of options had the fin....

I think all have it. It's the radio antenna...

No it's not. The radio antenna is embedded into the rear window.

I was wondering if that was the GPS or Sirius radio antenna?

I assumed the same thing... I think i assumed wrong. (unfortunately, because I really wanted the fin.)

From what i've read on other boards, you need either NAV, BMW Assist, or Sat. Prep...

Also, depending on which options, there are different size/shaped fins as well. (Not sure about this one... just what i've read)

that sucks

Well I assumed they all came with the fin. I did not get BMW assist, NAV or satellite prep so I guess I am screwed in regards to the fin.....

It also works with the optional phone dock to provide better phone reception (according to BMW's website).

You want the shark fin because of the way it looks?

When I was in High School I had a '69 dodge dart. Olive green with a huge dent in the passenger door. I had woked all summer to save of for a killer car stereo which was worth about twice the actual value of the car.

At the time a car phone was an total over the top luxury. People who had them had that little curly antenna that had to be drilled through your back window. as a joke I got a fake antenna that stuck on the back window so it looked like I had a car phone. it always got a laugh. Then some one broke into the car (I assume looking for the phone) and stole my stereo.

I don't know what made me think of that story

I actually didn't see any single one with the fin, and they all had the basic dash so I concluded this was a navigation/BMW Assist feature.

Has anyone seen a US version without the fin? I've looked at about 40 to 50 individual E90s now. All have had the fin.

From what I heard before-
The shark fin is what enables you to talk with BMW assist people. Remember that you need a transmitter to transmit what you speak into the microphone. So the shark fin is the transmitter/antenna. It should also work as a receiver to enable you to listen to what they are saying to you. The system works just like a celphone. This explains why the e46 with the premier package had them.

BMW fin

All BMW's have the fin. It is for the GPS and the mobile/cell phone anntena. You get it what ever you order as it is easier for BMW to fit it to all in the first place. They now all come with bluetooth phone prep, in Oz.

One of the first Z4 ads I remember seeing in "Wired" had the Z4 and the title: "Land Shark"

But it looks like perhaps the E60/90 are the landsharks!

All US ! have the fin
In Europe it depends on wether you spec options that need the fin. (Nav or phone prep - there is no sat radio in Europe)

I deliberately specd my car NOT to have the fin because I like my car to have the cleanest possible look. (No badge either).

I was going to try and do the same thing as you. But so far, I haven't heard of one person who has bought the car in the US that hasn't gotten the fin. Too bad.

I also get a car with itīs speed limiter set to 155mph and the roads to drive it. At no extra cost...

Can the fin be removed?

I think it detracts from the looks and when I finally a 325, would like to remove it.
