My first bimmer...

Finally got some pictures of my first bimmer to post. She's 2 weeks old and I'm already at the 900 mile mark. This car definitely lives up to its reputation. Its an absolute blast to drive. Can't wait till the break in is complete so I can really open it up on the road.

Take a look.
2006 BMW 330i sparkling graphite, with black leather interior w/premium, sport, and cold weather packages

Custom mods
Added 35% carbon based solarguard film which measures at 26% - <35% is illegal in oregon so I'm pushing it
Radar detector mounted and wiring integrated above the right side of the rear view mirror - no cables to see!
No front plate installed

Things I'm thinking about adding
Satelite radio, and alarm system. Any good feedback on where to get these and how hard the install is? Prices? My dealership is telling me I'm looking at least 3 hours of labor at $100 per hour to re-program the car, and that's on top of the parts and installation cost. They say that's all they charge, but it sometimes takes all day. Is that true?

Any picture ofhow the radar is integrated? I have a valentine and hate it sitting in the middle on the dash. I want to somehow conceal it. Thanks

Radar installation

I'll take some pics tonight and post them. Had the dealer install it for me. 30 minutes labor to bard wire the cable in. $10 for the direct wire cable. Total cost to install with parts was $60 for about 4" of cable sticking out right near the radar detector. Plus the detector is nicely hidden by the location between the roof, rain sensor and rear view mirror.

Side effect is I don't know that rear laser detection is all that good, but that's why I also purchased a laser difusion and anti-photo radar plate cover. That comes in later this week. Anyone know what the fine/laws are around these type of covers? it was only $35 so I thought I'd get it and ask around.

The tinted windows look great w/ Sparkling Graphite - definitely makes me feel more comfortable about my decision to tint mine.

Oh, by the way, what percentage of tint do you have on your car, and how do you like it?

Added 35% carbon based solarguard film which measures at 26% - <35% is illegal in oregon so I'm pushing it.

Love it. I was back and forth on the 20% film and 35% film because I was worried the 35% wasn't dark enough. Its gorgeous!!! With the sparkling graphite color and black interior, plus the inheret tint the car came with it measures out at 26% via the meter. Recommendation is to use the carbon film as the metallic film can interfere with the antenna signal quality.

Make sure you go a reputable name like solarguard/3m which offers lifetime gaurantee on the film to peeling, discoloration etc. This is not an area to be cheap on. I'd also suggest doing extensive interviews with various film people and get references.

Some helpful things I look for that I suggest others look for when doing this.
Tint used, how its installed (one peice on the back, and taken to the edge. Good tint shops do the installation in a semi-clean room facility that controls air circulation and dust. Costs more, but helps avoid things like lint getting stuck between the window and tint. I also look for how long they take to do the job. Someone that does it in 2-3 hours is rushing the job, I went for the guy that said 8 hours and told him I want it perfect so keep the car if needed till it is perfect.

I pick up my 3 on Friday (specs. below) and have an appointment to have it tinted the same day. I'm looking at doing 22% front and 33% for the remainder (legal in Oregon). Your tint job looks killer dude! Only thing I hate about getting it tinted is that you cannot open your windows for a week. Short amount of time really since I have waited 8 weeks for my car to come in
What dealer did you get your 3 from?

Hey thanks for the info. I was stressing that 30% wasn't going to be dark enough but 35% looks awesome on your car. There is a great tint shop in Santa Barbara that comes highly recommended, and I will be using them to do my car. They offer 3M tint. Is that what yours has? I am not sure if they mentioned carbon based tint or not at the shop. I think we decided on 30% but I can't find the quote right now.

I get up to Portland a lot on business. (I have been up there 3 times in the last two months). I just had to go out to Tillamook 2 weeks ago and it was gorgeous, as always. Maybe I will see your car up there on my next trip!

Got mine from Greg at Rassmussen. He was great and I highly recommend him to anyone in the area. Just tell him Alex sent you.

I wouldn't suggest doing 2 different shades, my opinion is it doesn't look good. I had my tint done at
H-M Motorsports
www.hm-motorsports.com
(503) 372-3200 main

If your interested, ask for Tom and tell him I recommended you to him. I know you have an appt with someone already, but I would really recommend Tom. Let me know who your getting yours done with if you decide someone else.

Tint

A good tinter should be able to tint any car in 1.5-2.5 hours. Anyone that takes 8 hours to tint a car is definitely not a professional since it would be impossible to make a living unless they charged $500 for each job. I tinted for many years and could do 4-5 cars in a fairly busy day.

I agree, but allowed the time if necessary. If you saw the job it was probably the best job I've ever seen or had done.

I dunno who your dealer is, but if it's Kuni they suck. Go to Rasmussen, they will be fair, professional, and get it done right.

I interviewed both Kuni and Rasmussen. Let's just say I didn't spend much time at Kuni and Rasmussen got the sale. They also get my recommendation. Service and support for the sale process and post sales questions has been excellent!

I had mine done at Sun Shield Glass Tinting. They're on Van Nuys right off the 101 if you're in the valley. 35% all around = $150 with a lifetime warranty.

Excellent choice in color and options.... But then again I may be a bit biased, as I got pretty much the same car!!!

Nicely done detector install... Is that the Passport 8500? Was it difficult to hardwire it up? (I've seen several instructions for the E46, new 5-series, and X5... was the process similar?)

Looks great!
