Question Why do you like Phoenix Yellow?

Interested in what it is about Phoenix Yellow that appeals to those that drive a BMW in this color. Saw an M3 this evening on Route 23 around Wayne, NJ in this color (the first PY car I've seen in person). On the M3 at least, it certainly was a car you could not fail to notice. Is Phoenix Yellow a choice on any other models besides the M3?

I think it would be safe to say it's probably not a color that would appeal to the masses (or maybe I'm way off here) so what makes an owner pick it? I'm neutral on it, although I do admit I wouldn't want it for myself but I don't dislike it.

I know color choice is pretty subjective but I'm really sincerely interested in hearing opinions.

also available on '01-'02 M Roadsters & Coupes
I think it looks awsome on the roadster...the yellow with a black top, makes for a stunning combo

looks pretty good on the m3 & coupe, though I'd still say dakar was a better yellow

it's just something different I suppose

most bmw colors are rather dull & uninspiring (@ least most/many non-M colors), so phoenix, just like laguna seca & interlagos are just something a little different & a little more out there

Funny, I saw a Phoenix Yellow M3 in atlanta in 2002 and immediately knew what kind of car it was. Personally, I like it for the M3, though, as you said, it's a nice color so long as the color isn't on MY car. I think PY suits the M3 well though.

Funny - I saw one today.

They had a CPO PY M3 at Century West BMW about a month ago - I think it had a cinn interior. I was thinking "good luck selling that!"

It was gone in 2 days....

2 each his own I guess...

I don't, it's a hideous color. i refer to it as puke yellow or bile yellow.

almost as bad as smurf blue, actually PY is worse than smurf blue...

Another Dakar Yellow fan here...If I were to buy an E36 M3, that would definitely be the color for me.

I like it (and LS Blue, Interlagos Blue and whatever the purple color was called) because they stand out... Call it the "high school dweeb" in me, but I like a car that stands out somewhat, but not overly obvious, like some of the Fast and Furious crowd... My car is Sienna Red II, which is not that much of an "out there" color, but it's a little different then your usual BMW colors... It didn't seem to sell well, as you don't see many of them... which means (at least in my area) if your see a Sienna Red II coupe, it's probably me!

I actually have grown to like Phoenix Yellow and Laguna Seca Blue on the M3. They work well with the agressive stance of the car IMO. Of course Imola is best.

Strange. I saw a PHX Yellow M3 at the service department when I picked up my POS on Tuesday. That color does make a statement!

I guess BMW just wanted to create a sporty color different from the rest. I myself am not a big fan of PHX yellow, ... but Laguna Seca Blue and Imola Red..

I wonder if BMW will try to come up with a new color for the E90 M3.. maybe something like "Diarrhea Green" or "Post-beans-and-corn-for-dinner Brown"

Actually, that car is sort of the Duck Amuck of cars, and IIRC I put it there because someone was giving me some sort of sh!t about my avatar being 10 pixels too large in one direction.

I had found my CPO M3 back early last year at the local dealer...checking around I was offered a leftover 2003 PY M3 from an out of town dealer for $300 over invoice, would have still been about $3500 higher. I didn't hate the color, but the extra money and questionable aesthetics were enough for me to pick the 7K mile Silver Gray. A few months later, my dealer had not one, but three, brand new 2004 PY's in stock. I knew the internet manager at the time and asked him how that happened. He shook his head and said they had just put a new guy in charge of ordering the "stock" cars and apparently he didn't know they referred to the color as "No sell yell." I drive by the dealer every day and it took them six months or so to get rid of them all.

Our Dealer warned us about the dangers of getting a "wild, unusual" color when we ordered Topaz .

I don't like Phoenix Yellow, but I've always loved the yellow in the M/M3 promotional materials:

Is this supposed to be PY, cause it sure doesn't look like this in real life, sun or not. Or is it Dakar? (Did European M3s get Dakar?)

that's a good yellow. (the pic posted by fenphen just above) just because something is unusual doesn't make it good...

The 2 original E46 M3 promotional colors were PY and LSB. In the promotional material the PY did look like much more of a saturated color than it does in real life.

I wonder what was faster to get rid of. The cars or the new guy in charge of ordering?
