August Plant Shutdown???????????

So is it true the plant shuts down to retool in August?

So if I order my 330i at the end of July will it be built during September?

If it is built in Sept. should the new software issues be worked out?

Thanks

Yes.
All BMW plants in Germany close down in August. They go on vacation.

All the software should be changed over for September production, October delivery.

I don';t think the plant closes in August - saw a production run and cars were scheduled to be built in every week in august. heard they formerly closed in august - but no longer.

Well, they still take vacations in Germany. In fact Europeans get a major amount of vacation time as opposed to us in the U.S. It might be that some factories are running at partial capacity during August, but the majority of the employees in these German factories go on vacation in August. These plants are so freakin' automated these days they probably don't need many people there to build cars, so I guess its possible that some cars are completed in August.

If anyone's getting a car completed in August, I doubt it would have all of the updates, but then again what's the difference? By the time the car gets here to the States the local BMW dealers will probably have all of the updates, or better still, the updates will probably be available @ the V.P.C. on the docks where the car is prepped.

Aren't US bound cars made in South Africa? So the closing of the German plant(s) would have no affect on production during August. Just an idea.

The German plants close in August. They take vacations seriously. The e90's are made in Europe, regardless of destination.

No, only some. Mostly the 325i.

My understanding was that there was no August production - luckily, my E90 325i was ordered June 29, and is now "Awaiting Transport" in Munich, according to the Owner's Circle. That seems pretty fast - it was built in two weeks time.

Now I'm concerned that whatever re-tooling/software upgrades that are put in in August will not be present on my car. I guess I'll just have to take it back in to the dealer for the upgrades.

The hair is standing up on my arms in anticipation of a mid August delivery!!

My ED date is September 2nd. My CA tells me my Production Number is for August production. So, I assume the factories are up and running in August! As an aside: BMW has negotiated extremely flexible work schedules with its Unions, so it can work factories for a wide range of dates and hours without paying overtime. That allows the company to adjust to shifting demand while maximizing capacity utilization. There are some interesting articles on the Web about this.

BMW will be producing the E90 in August. They retooled for the E90 back in Jan/Feb of this year.

I dunno who's building them, but I am getting 40 325s and about 50 330s built in August. And the 330s are only built in Regensburg.

Philippek - Just curious, is that ratio of 50 330s to 40 325s approximately what you see in the number of 330 sales to 325 sales?

Just an FYI, but the BMW German plants have not shut down in August for many, many years. Demand is too high, and with the E90 just released in May there is no way they are taking a vacation this year. There was actually an article in the Roundel regarding this a few years ago (around the time the E46 was released).

It's not really fair to judge the sales ratios of the E90 models right now. It's hot, and everything that hits the lot is going to sell pretty quickly. BMW obviously knows this too, and that's why they're building a disproportionate number of 330s, which are more profitable for them.

My experience with the E46 was that the 325i outsold the 330i by 3 or 4 to 1. I would expect to see that same pattern develop in a year to 18 months from now.
