about to buy a E39 540 -00, need opinions.

There are a few problems with this car as i see it, but first here are pictures of this car
http://defense.nu/albums/albums.php?g=bmw540salu

My biggest problem with the car is that it lacks almost every option except for the M-package and electric rear sunscreen.
The history of the car seems ok with two owners and the milage seems to check out as well.
If you look at the pictures there seems to have been some work done at the rear of the car, i am invetigating this as we speak.

Is this a do or a donīt car?

Looks nice. You are lucky, as US-bound cars only have leather and I much prefer the cloth seats you have. Hard to tell which options are in the car or not from pictures - if you cannot live without a specific option, then don't get it. Otherwise, if price is comparable in your region, then worth considering!

Your hesitations are in line with mine. Though each person has different requirement for a car, I would not buy it due to the lack of options. In looking at the pictures, this car has the base 6-speaker sound system, no xenon lights, no telephone preparation, and some sort of aftermarket electronics installation done. That would turn me away from this car.

Find one with heated seats and on-board monitor and there's little you could regret later! :-)

Personally I wouldn't touch it, the lack of options aside...

Take into consideration I don't know what is stock on a Swedish 540 vs an US version. If I was looking at this car here I would think about these things...

1. Angel Eyes on a '00? To me that says someone modded it. It also throws up a warning that someone younger owned it. Now yes, it could have been a responsible driver, (I'm installing a set on my 00) but odds are against it. That is unless the lights were introduced to European models a year before the US.

2. The M door sills, not stock in the US. If it isn't stock there, someone is in love with the M badge. To me that says they're interested in performance. That, in turn, to me says that they are probably pushing on it a little, not a usual daily driver for them.

3. Someone mentioned custom electronics? I just glanced over the pics and owned my car for only about 3 weeks so I may not recognize it. Anyway, thats one of my big Xs that I look for. One being dark tint, the other being custom sound.

Now I'm a hypocrite here because I have done all of what I mentioned to my car However for every early 20s person like me that babies their car; there's 100 17 year old kids that have parents with deep pockets who have no respect for the car they drive. All they know is the car is fast and theres a blue and white hood emblem. Personally I would either stay away from it or get a serious pre-purchase inspection at an actual BMW dealership.

The AE are aftermarket ones.
The M sills on the doors was an no expense option when ordering a car with the M-package.
The custom electrics would be the phone i think, im not sure what Tyrone is thinking of, but im sure that he will shime in here

Just got back from looking at this latest car, it makes me wonder how ppl keep their cars.
The Enginebay looked like a mess i have never seen before, the interior was "ok"
i took a few pics of the real "problemareas" of this enginebay.
http://members.defense.nu/gallery/album03
Is this a fixable situation?

I will continue my monolog here then
It turns out that lowering this car with EDC is the least of the next owners problems, and that wonīt be me for sure.
I honestly donīt know what to expect from other cars since my previous 528 was in mint condition and i keept it that way to the day i sold it.

This 540 was almost loaded with every option avalible except for Nav, the price is in the upper range of what a car in mint condition should cost.
Im quite anal when buying cars so i allways make sure that i can have a good look under the car before buying.
The engine compartement is a total mess, and it is even worse under the car...

I

So to sum it all up a little,

the Brakes are all done both front and back, Itīs due for a Inspection II with a complete fluid flush all around (engine, g-box, rear axle, etc) the climate control dosent start heating the compartement untill after 30 minutes, the rear tires are done, there is quite a bad vibration when going 110km/h (65mph), the paint is really bad with scratches on every panel, The car is leaking everything it can at every connector or sealing, Yet the owner still claims this is a car in mint condition!
Good thing this car was close to me otherwise i would have made him pay for my trip put to see it.

Allways check the underside of the car you are about to buy!

That car is trashed, move on.

I would recommend you look for an 2001 or newer car...there were some nice cosmetic updates including the Hella Angel Eye headlights and tail lights. Also, (outside the USA) you could get the M-Sport package which included the M-technic front and rear bumpers, this was available on both the 540 and 530. Keep looking, and good luck. It took me many months to find my car up in Canada! But the M-technic look is so much nicer than the standard bumper'd cars.

The other advantage of a newer car is less time for the current owner to neglect and abuse the car.... I was shocked as you when looking at (at the time) two year old cars with all four wheel curbed, front and rear bumpers scratched....scratched leather seats, dirty carpet, door dings, etc. Just plain abuse. I've had my car for two years now, (four year old car) and it looks just as nice as when I bought it two years ago...damn near perfect...and it now has 48,000 miles on it.
