Exclamation 11th Digit of VIN Number

The 11th digit of the VIN number tells you at what plant the BMW is made. The codes are as follows:

A, F, G, K - Munich (GER)
B, C, D - Dingolfing (GER)
E, J - Regensberg (GER)
L - Spartanburg (USA)
N - Rosslyn (RSA)

Does anyone know why the 3 German plants have multiple letters - for example, what does it mean if a car made in Munich has an "A" designation rather than a "K" designation?

What designation is on the E90s made so far? Is there a difference between the 325 and the 330?

Thanks

I think the question is not the first digits, but the 11th and 12th digits of the VIN - what are your 11th and 12th digits?

I visited the local BMW dealer and they have 18 E90's on the lot.

Regarding the 11th and 12th digits of the VIN:

11 of them are KR - these are 330 automatics (9), 325 automatic (1), and 325 stick (1)
4 of them are KX - these are all 325 automatic
3 of them are AZ - these are all 330 stick

What do the letters mean? Are all 330 stick's with AZ as the 11th and 12th digits? Are all 325automatics with KX as those digits?

What numbers to people have with their 330 sticks?

At my company, we do a lot of work with VINs and here is the summary that one of the folks here put together. It basically defines what means what.
Characters 1-3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI).

Character 1 = Country of Origin (see partial table below)

Character 2 = Identifies manufacturer (sometimes only in conjunction with 1 & 3)

Character 3 = For the big three (GM, Ford & Chrysler), this usually identifies vehicle type (car, pickup, van, SUV)

Characters 4-8 are the Vehicle Descriptor Series (VDS) – Identifies model, body type, 2WD/4WD, engine, restraints, etc.

These are year, make and model specific, so the same characters mean completely different things for different vehicles (even among different models within the same make of the same model year)

Character 9 is the Check-Digit (Think of it as the VIN’s parity – error detecting only, not correcting. Can only be 0-9 and X)

Character 10 is the Model Year (see table below – note that it repeats as of 2011)

Character 11 is the Assembly Plant (this is assigned by the manufacturer itself)

Characters 12-17 are the Sequence / Production number (think of it as the vehicle’s serial number)

Characters 13-17 must be numeric for passenger automobiles (cars, light trucks and MPVs)

I never said it was simple...

Further to the above, does anyone know the BMW manufacturing plant when the 11th digit of the VIN number is V ?

+1 Does anyone know where to find the latest key for the 11th digit? "V" seems to be popular now.

My 11th digit is also P and 12th is either O or 0. 335 Coupe 6 speed Euro delivery. Maybe Euro delivery cars are assigned P or is there a new assembly plant?

P is Regensburg. All 3-series Coupes and Convertibles, M3, some 3-series sedans and 1-series are made there.

3-series Sedans are also made at Munich, Leipzig and Rosslyn, South Africa. I don't know the current codes for these.

3-series wagons are made only at Munich.

5, 6, 7 series and M5, M6 are made at Dingolfing.

Has there been any reports of inferior quality for 3 series sedans made (assembled) in Souty Africa?

Not that I've heard. The Rosslyn plant has won quality awards.

If you order a car it will most likely come from Germany because it takes a lot longer to come from South Africa (shipped via Bmrerhaven). 325/328 on dealer lots are more likely to be South Africa cars.

As far as quality goes, I would worry as much about Leipzig (former East Germany).

Avoid Spartanburg for sure. I have been to East Germany and wonder if anyone has personal experience of bad quality from the Leipzig plant, because I felt the same pride of workmanship from the East Germans as I did from mechanics in places like Essen.

If you have to have an X5 or Z4, Spartanbug is your only choice. If not it doesn't matter.

X3 is built by a contractor in Austria. That might be one to watch.

I didn't mean to say that I was really worried abou Leipzig OR South Africa just that there's as much reason to worry about one as the other.

It seems that nobody can decipher the current BMW vin 11th digit to reveal the plant of manufacture of current 3 series models. I have seen models with "V" as the eleventh digit of the VIN number, and would really like to know in which plant these cars have been assembled.
