Ipod adapter / stereo replacement

I recently bought a 97' 328i with an after market Clarion in-dash stereo installed. I'd like to replace the Clarion with an OEM stereo (in-dash CD or trunk changer), that also enables Ipod connectivity. Any suggestions as to which OEM stereo and Ipod adapter pairings I should select?

I don't aware of any e36 factory stereo be able to pair with iPod directly. That's only started around 2000/01 with e46 and can retrofit to earlier e46s.

Try Alpine 9833/9835/9853/9855 (983x is 04 model, 985x is 05 model) with Alpine iPod adapter. I have the 9835 setup in my e36 and it looked really nice because all the button can change colour to match the orange light of the rest of the interior. (That's the only reason I bought it!!!)

Smile Ipod Adaptor

I recently had an Alpine unit (as previously mentioned) with an ipod adaptor fitted in one of my cars. They are excellent and only cost AU$500, plus fitting. I also agree that you will probably not find an OEM that is ipod adaptable. I have full details of the ipod adaptor if you want it (Alpine Part number etc). The unit allows pretty much full functionality of your ipod from the head unit, including playlists and the like. It's way cool and who wants a 6 stacker when you have 5000 songs on tap in the glove box?

Oh by the way ...

Forgot to mention the Griffin Roadtrip, which might be a better option for iPod adaptability. Available from most Apple Shops (and probably plenty of others) this unit uses FM reception to play through your current FM radio. Plugs into a special multi adjustable cradle (comes with the unit) and also recharges on the go. I find this useful as I can change it through different vehicles and the reception is excellent. It also allows you to change frequencies if the current setting has a station that interferes. An excellent unit at around $150 (Australian) and pretty good value. I tried it out in my 323 E36 recently and had no problem at all.
