SMG is a manual transmission, period. It can be put in the automatic mode for those whose SO needs an automatic or when you are distracted by a cell phone/crying baby etc. It is awesome for a person like me who wants to have the fun of controlling the shifting like a manual but does not want to mess with the clutch.

There is no reason for a person who is going to drive in the auto mode to try an SMG. They can always do manual shifting with the STEP on the rare occasion they want to do that.

The main reason I went for the Z4 versus the S2000 or the Z roadster was the presence of the SMG. I am looking forward to the availability of the SMG in the E90. I hope speedfreak is right .

The only concern is long term reliability. However if I do not care if I am leasing.

I think BMW needs to market the SMG as the transmission for the auto driver who yearns for the sporty experience of a manual. They have not marketted the SMG at all. They might get a lot more foot-traffic if the market the SMG properly. Not all of them will end up with an SMG but will certainly increase the interest in what BMW offers.

I think deep inside, BMW knows that the SMG is not ready for the mass-market. Hence they are not aggressively marketting it. I wonder how many folks outside internet fora know about the SMG?

I have driven M3s and a couple of 645s with SMG and I will echo the same comments.
1. Takes some learning, but once you get the hang you wonder why people do not appreciate the technology.
2. reallly fun once you get it.
3. the auto is really for someone stuck in traffic

SMG rocks!

Heck, even if you are stuck in traffic, you still don't have to do a thing with your left foot!
