E60 Reliability?

I see that JD Powers gives the 2005 E60 good Over Quality Ratings on their website. However Consumer Reports gives the 530xi a BLACK dot for their rating... that is the worst rating possible in consumer reports. Also Forbes.com said that the e60 is unrelaiable as well... whats with the conflicting reports... what do you guys think? Reliable or not? i dont think it is as reliable as, lets say a Lexus, do you?

-No I am not a Lexus Owner.

I think the E60 is in its second year of a new model and they are still working out the kinks. I tend to like and believe CR however the proof is in the pudding. I've got 3k on my 545i...perfect thus far. I have two other friends who got their 545s when I got mine and theirs are doing as well.

Notice that I have a 2001 530i...CR gave it a very high reliability rating and in fact, this car made one of their highest ratings ever for a car. BMW just needs some time to perfect the car (hardware, software, etc.).

4K on my 545 and the only thing "weird" that has happened is my SAT radio continued to work after shutting off the engine and pulling out the key... one time only.

Other than that...... Perfect! As you can see, I waited a year for them to work out the bugs.... which as I understand it, were many.... thus the Black dot.

Not sure I understand how Consumer Reports could give a "quality" rating to the 530xi. It has been in production less than 3 months with fewer than 1,000 units delivered to the U.S. market.

I took delivery of a 530xi last month - less than 1,000 miles on it - but no problems or issues so far.

'04 545ia - 1100 mi - perfect.

Good news might be some negotiation strength. I love i-drive btw, but I think it dampened the overall appeal of the car. Not saying that's a reliability metric. The knob is ergonomically perfect for me to rest my right arm on the center console and flick to the next song or radio station with the patience of a hornet - helps that it's auto trans. I was tired of manual transmissions and got the wife's *****in by going auto trans. I really enjoy this side benefit of the auto trans. No overworking the trapezoid to reach the dash.

Though I subscribe to CR, I take their car reviews with a grain of salt and do consider them biased toward small Japanese vehicles as far as cars, not talking trucks here. They're a decent data point, but that's all.

So many car mags love Toyotas - I've had 2 and my family had 2 more when I was a teen. I'd buy another, but they're not so great. WRT fit and finish, weatherstripping peeled off my wife's '04 4Runner at the doors (3M glue I'm told), let in water and stained the ceiling cloth. Prior to the weatherstripping coming off, and after the repair, if the windows are cracked open and we brake, the water trickles forward and down into the power controls mounted inside the door. Still lots of wind noise...makes us compulsively hit the window up button, though windows are closed.

Everyone has a story to tell, but I love my '04 E60 - its reliability has been top notch.

Consumer reports

It is important to remember that consumer reports takes statiscal samples from actual owners. Having said that I have never seen them be more specific on what types of issues the car has been plagued with. From having read these boards before I bought my 2006 530i the vast majority of problems were software related. There having also been a lot of gripes about "creaking" door seals.

Generally I do take CR seriously and am very interrested in long term quality. My car now has 1100 miles on it, but I really expect it to last 200k if I chose to keep in that long. I also have a 97 honda accord with 124k that has worked perfectly the last nine years. I expect that. One or two problems wouldn't ruin it for me, but a 50K car better hold up well long term.

Defintely enjoying the car though. If it performs well long term I will stay a loyal customer. If not I'll buy a car that is rated "above average" by the relevant consumer sources.

4200miles and no issues except my right side front window has a problem with the anti trap mechanism where when I hold the power button as I am driving, it fails to close unless I hold the button and not let go until it closes. I have read that this was a major issue with all 5series.

Lexus might be a more reliable car, but do you want just a reliable pedestrian car, or a reliable FUN to drive machine?

Right ON! I took a windy route this morning on the way in to work... listening to Led Zeppelin and in "DS" mode. Gives "zoom-zoom" a completely new meaning........ "been a long time, been a long time, been a long lonely lonely lonely time........"

Anyone else annoyed by the apparent 'backward-ness' design of the window control? I don't know about you, but I can NEVER remember which way to push or pull the button to get the window to go up or down! I always want to pull the button 'down' to get the window 'down.' Even though I know this, I still fark it up all the time!

As soon as I hop back into the '01 530i, no problemo!

Just ranting.... Car's awesome!

Have had 545 since July 04. 11,000 miles no problems. The rant over i-drive is a joke. i-drive or similar is were most high end cars will go. The car is everything I wanted and then some. This is my fifth 5 series over 15 plus years.

Good to know

That you have had no problems. That was a concern for me too before I bought it. At this point I have been very happy with my purchase. The car is a lot of fun. Also I initially thought I -drive would be a big pain, but it hasn 't been. Even for someone that likes to change stations often it has worked fine. I was tempted by the Infitini M35/45, but was somehow drawn to the 5. I have been very happy with my choice thus far.

Hello, everyone! I'm a new member on this forum, and I just want to say that I've found it to be most useful and stimulating! I only wish I'd found it sooner. I recently purchased a 2006 530i (Automatic, Navigation, Premium Package, Cold Weather Package), and I simply LOVE my new car! I paid $51,700 for it; I overpaid by quite a bit, I think (as I said, I wish I'd been aware of this forum earlier ), and I really regret not getting the Premium Sound option (I'm told it is significantly better than the standard sound system; is that true?). Nevertheless, I've had a problem-free wonderful 1500 miles on it so far *knock on wood panel!*, and I look forward to driving this lovely machine for many many years to come. Anyway, great to be part of the bimmer family! Cheers!

For your second BMW, here is a good start for you:

JOIN BMWCCA (bmw car club of america): www.bmwcca.org

Why? Rebate, Baby!! You'll need to be a member for a year to get it.

Next, get over to the Euro Delivery forum and read, read, read and learn, learn, learn. It is the best way to purchase a BMW for both fun factor and money savings.

2004 545 - Minor Electrical Weirdness

I've got 25K on my 2004 545 and the only thing I'd mention are strange happenings with the electrical system. Nothing really serious - just, well...weird.

First off, if the car has been sitting in the garage for several hours and I open any door except the driver's - the parking lights come on and STAY ON. They don't go off until I open the driver's door. I've taken it in the dealership, and even though they said they upgraded the software - the problem remains. I live with it.

Also - once (and only once so far) - I started the car and all sorts of strange lights and messages came on. I turned the car off immediately - then back on again. Its never happened since.

Other than that - the car performs very well.

Try doing ED(european delivery) on your next purchase and you will really realize the savings. i can't wait 2 1/2 years to do it again. Agent 99 summarized well. Go to the ED forum and start researching now, it is well worth it.
