Tape Deck Removal

I have a 99 528it with the 4:3 nav. My tape deck has crapped out on me and I need to remove it. Are there any pics or detailed instructions on what I need to remove to get the thing out?

Thanks, dp

I don't know about how the NAV figures in, but the ordinary deck comes out easily. Pull off the volume knob. There is a torx screw under there. Unscrew it and the MID pops out, revealing two more torx screws to take out the tape deck, and hopefully in your case, the NAV. Go to www.bmwtips.com to see pics of what I am talking about. It is in the "business CD install" tip under the audio tips section.

You already have the URL - poke around and you'll likely find what you need. The MP3/auxiliary input writeup should help.

I know how it comes out on the E38... I am guessing it's similar? It required removing the wood trim over the glove box from behind it, popping off the wood trim between the NAV and the instrument panel, then removing the wood trim and screws on the NAV. Pretty easy.

Just curious, what was different?

The wood trim over the glove box was the hard part for me. There were four white plastic nuts... the one towards the middle of the car was almost impossible to reach.

that piece just came right off with constant pressure from the edges toward the middle. didn't have to remove the nuts.

the piece i couldn't figure out was the wood trim around the 4:3 lcd screen.

i couldn't get enough leverage on the spring assembly to release the bottom. i ended up taking of the bottom dash on both sides and the bottom of the steering wheel.

finally i "willed" it off and saw how it worked. piece of cake now.

btw i put one of those cd adapters in my tape deck and hid the wire behind the dash. makes a nice ipod interface for a total cost of $10.

Ahhh, I see. I suspect over time I will learn more about the differences between the E38 and E39, but in general, alot is the same. Thanks for the feedback!
