Oil Light On and Off w/ Good Level

My oil light has been coming on two or three times per week for 10 seconds or so after I start my 2000 323ci (it doesn't come on right away, maybe a five second delay.) The oil level seems to be fine and I had the oil and filter changed thinking that was the issue. The problem got neither better nor worse after the oil change. I've been using 5w30 Mobile 1 and was wondering if that is the problem or am I heading toward a major issue?

I could be wrong here, but doesn't the oil light (while driving) indicate lack of oil pressure? Oil level and oil pressure are two different things.

There could be some blockage or perhaps the pump is failing?

If the issue is pressure, is this a common problem at 50,000 miles? Sorry to sound so stupid, but I am.

I wouldn't think that something should go wrong so soon, but anything is possible. It could always be a sensor problem too. BMWs are know to have different types of these go bad. You should have it checked out soon.

If it was truly a pressure problem, it would probably trigger the light while under load....since this is`nt the case, it`s more than likely an overly-sensitive sending unit....nothing to get upset about.

Regards,
Bob

Have the dealer (or qualified tech) check the oil level sensor. Mine went bad, they replaced it and no more false alarms.

I got the EXACT same thing. Does it stay on? Mine doesn't. It comes on with a 5 sec delay, stays yellow for 10 secs or so, then is off and never comes back. And it happens almost every time I turn the engine on. I've been told that the sensor is a bit too sensitive and I could replace it if the yellow light really bothers me. Started at 45,000 miles, now I got 60,000, so probably no big problem.

Just make sure the light does not stay on.

Thank you for the information. It has never come on while I have been driving, just a driveway event. I'll have them check the sensor just to be safe. No more nightmares tonight of grenading engines and selling the dog to pay for the repairs.

Very true. I had a lab and he kept taking my car to the dealer for repairs.

Two days now and no oil warnings, but I did get another quarter stuck in the damn 5-cent slot. Where's my paper clip?

Mine was replaced at no charge. It was determined to be "faulty." The sender seems to run around $13. If you cut and paste the link below, it should take you to a place I have had good success with as far as buying parts for reasonable prices.

If the YELLOW oil light is coming on and the oil level is correct, then the likely culprit is a faulty sensor or wiring - this light indicates oil LEVEL.

If the RED oil light comes on, then the oil PRESSURE is low - this light should not be ignored, switch off the engine as soon as possible, engine damage may already have occured. This light should not come on before the yellow light if it is due to low oil level.

Hmm... my '05 330ci ZHP just started doing this when you turn OFF the car - yellow oil light for 5-10 seconds, then off. Never on while starting, never on while driving. 7500 miles. I guess I'll hit the ole' dealer!

I have a 2000 328i with 38,000 miles. The yellow oil can light used to come on if the car was restarted within an hour or less. The light would turn on within 15 seconds of starting and stay on for 15 to 30 seconds. This sequence of events is random. Maybe it happens 2 days in a row. Maybe it does not happen for a week.

For grins, I unplugged the oil level sensor. The light still turns for 10-20 seconds, in a completely random pattern.

I check the oil level weekly.

I have a 2001 330ci, and every time I start the car the yellow oil light comes on. It stays on for approximately 20 seconds and turns off. This is not just once a while, rather every time I start the car.
Anyone have had similar problem? if so can you shed some light as to which way I should go with this?

Thanks guys.

I'm surprised that BMW haven't claimed that it's supposed to do this.
Every other car seems to have this issue [or rather non -issue ;^) ]
My car has always had it.

There is a service bulletin about this issue. It has to do with a faulty oil level sender. Have the dealer take a look, and search google forthe notice...

The light sometimes comes on at engine startup just for 3-5 secs. And sometimes after turning off the engine also for another 3-5 secs.

The oil level is fine and I use the same oil specs as you (5w30). A mechanic told me that probably the oil was too thin to be detected by the oil sensor and that could cause it. But who knows? Im thinking on taking it to the dealer and better ask them what it could be.

It is good know of this issue. If mine starts doing the same, I won't have to panic at least.
Just curiosity, can this sensor replacement be done as DIY?
How much would be typical dealer charger for this work?
