Sludge in BMW 535 IS

I drove my 535 IS 1600 to my destination,when the car arrived at the destination it was fine the car rested for a day however turner over the engine the next day was out of the question the car was sluggish and the oil was black I put this down to engine sludge and stupidity on my part.Since then I have been trying to revive the engine by firstly putting in a quart of oil then a engine flush then a new filter and new oil and a qurat of Ristone there was a slight improvement but then the engine reverted to its earlier malady.
Bottom line how is this situation I got myself remedied or will it in volved taking the engine apart and cleaning it I would prefer investing in a deterent that would ultimately do the trick Ive heard of Auto -RX but I am sceptical is there anybody out ther that can help me?

There is a very long post in the E39 section on a guy with sludge problems...ketchup is his handle. Also, I've personally used the Auto-RX stuff...just get it!

I'm waiting on my box of auto-rx to arrive (along with my car) here in CA, so I can get started on treatment. I was originally going to document it step by step, removing the valve covers and all but as my personal time has been dramatically cut down (school) I'll just be taking pics from the open oil filler hole.

How did you get a 535i in the U.S.? That's my question. AFAIK, BMW didn't import this E39 model although it was popular in Europe

I'm currently in the "cleaning" step with my '99 528iT. May I ask what brand/weight oil you used for the rinse (i.e. non-synthetic) phase?

BTW, I'm also running ARX through an older Buick - cured a small oil leak after about 500 miles in the clean phase. All indications are this product performs as advertised.

Consider me stupid but I have to ask because it doesn't seem very clear.... why are you guys sludging up? Are you trying to use the once recommended 14-15,000 mile oil service interval?

The OP must have an E28...that's the only 535is I know of...and this thread is ancient.

Hahahahaha This seems to be happening quite a bit lately. I guess someone has actually been using the Search function.

A lot of BMWs have sludge due to the BMW service interval. There's probably some engineers at BMW with a sick sense of humour, that's the most likely explanation.
