Need advice on E46 audio system upgrade

I would like to improve the sound of the audio system in my 99 E46 328i. It has the stock base stereo system (not H/K). The sound quality is ok, but there is NO bass. I don't want or need window rattling bass. I would be happy with the sound of BMW's H/k systems. I want the car to look as stock as possible, and don't want to hack it up. I'd like to keep the original HU, and I don't want to install a speaker box in the trunk for space reasons. Would just replacing the speakers with higher quality ones be a good idea? Today I was looking at an E46 with a H/K system. They have woofers mounted on the underside of the rear shelf (mine doesn't). Is it possible to use the H/K rear shelf bass speakers with the stock amp? I considered upgrading all speakers to H/K, but that probably isn't very cost effective. However, I work at a BMW dealer and get all parts at cost. Any thoughts or ideas are welcome. Thanks,
Andy
