x-drive panned

in todays wall street journal (friday sept 16th) they ran a story on 50k sedans now coming with awd. they ran a roan test of sorts on an ice rink. the bmw 530xi came in last. they also inaccurately described how x-drive functions saying that it it devides power 60/40 between back and front wheels. this is not my understanding. i thought the latest x-drive has all the power in the back unless or until there is a need elsewhere in which case power is delivered to that wheel in .10 seconds. the best awd accrodring to the paper? the mercedes e class with 4 matic. 1) who ever would drive on total ice? 2) does anything really help on a sheet of ice except for studded wnow tires. if they are going to perform such a test at least do it snow which is more realistic. the press sucks (by and large).

The X Drive does NOT have all the power to the real wheels in normal conditions, - see link below:

http://www.germancarfans.com/news.cf...eng/bmw/1.html

X Drive Info from this article:

........The result is a significant, clearly noticeable improvement of driving safety and stability as well as agility and traction, particularly on winding roads. When taking a bend dynamically and at high speed, xDrive delivers op*ti*mum drive power to the respective axle at all times, significantly reducing both under- and oversteer in the process. And when driving straight ahead under normal conditions, xDrive in general splits up drive power between the front and rear axles in a 40:60 ratio, thus maintaining that typical BMW style of rear-wheel drive and power.

i stand corrected. the wall street journal had it right. still, it is hard to believe that bmw's version of all wheel drive was the worst performer in their silly "on ice" road test.

Its likely the quattro, for snowy weather conditions. But for overall driving dynamics the bmw is the best. Plus bmw doesnt share parts with troublesome VW.

You are right, no car is guarenteed safety on ice, I purchased the xi, since I wanted at least more safety / traction during snowy days, however my ultimate solution is moving somewhere, where there is NO Winter!

By they way even with this split between Rear & AWD for the xi, the xi still handles and drives very well (as you know) as you can imagine. I would have loved to get a 530i Sport, but you can't drive that vehicle in any type of snowfall without feeling scared.

x-drive

it was never really about the x-drive for me, it was about getting the wagon body style. i live in portland, oregon where it rarely snows. we do get ice on occasion. the x-drive HAS to be better than not having it if i do see snow, irrespective of what the wall street journal says. i agree the handling on the wagon has been great. the eclass mercedes wagon is quite nice (i saw many in europe) but i think the bimmer styling is more interesting, certainly more "fresh" to the market, and i like the driving feel better on the bimmer.

All I know is that I drove an X3 through a Northwest Indiana winter last year and it was the most stable sure-footed vehicle I've ever driven in less than ideal traction conditions. Hence my purchase of a new 530xiT this week.
