Roominess: E90 vs E46

I'm really interested in the E91 Touring and want to get a gauge of how much roomier the E91 is compared to the E46 Wagon (E47?). I would be using the E91 as a family car, with 2 child seats in the back.

As an approximate gauge, I'd be interested in 'Festers opinions on how much roomier the E90 (sedan) is compared to the E46 (sedan)? Particularly in the back seats. Noticeably more legroom, shoulder room, or hip room?

I always thought that the E46 was a bit tight in the back seats for any adults.

Much Thanks!

The E90 is about the same size as the E39 5 series (previous generation until 2004). It is much larger in the rear than the E46. It is actually a good size for a sedan. I can see 2 childss seats fitting comfortably as they do in the E39 but not more than that. The E90 feels much larger than the E46. According to the product info guide the shoulder room is increased by one inch and the rear leg room by nearly and inch. It feels more than that in the rear because of the location of the front seat in comparison to the E46 is "ideally" placed closer to the fron to of the car. It just appears and feels bigger to me and the dimensions are nearly the same as the E39 as I mentioned (someone on the forum meaasured the 2 and posted the numbers somewhere....)
Try it out and see what you think! Best of Luck!

Maybe its just me, but does 1 inch in shoulder room and nearly an inch in legroom in the back really make for that much difference When I drove the E90 it did feel slightly bigger than my E46, but I chalked that up to the different dash layout and lighter interior colors. Is it possible to put 2 child seats in the back of an E46? It looks like there are hookups for them, but again, I don't have a child so I don't know how big those seats are.

I had 2 car seats in my 2002 330xi and now 2 car seats in my 2006 330i. Incrementally the extra inch here and there does make a pretty "big" difference, especially in the back seats. If that extra inch on the e90 means that your knee is not pushed up against the back of the front driver seat then that extra inch makes a huge difference. The front driver seat also definately feels slightly more roomy and comfortable in every dimension.

Neither car will however allow for 2 car seats and another additional passeneger in the back seat.

I actually measured the interiors of my E39 540 and an E90 325 while waiting at the dealership.

Rear leg room - (with the drivers seat in a comfortable driving position in both cars)
E39- 27"
E90- 28"
Measured from rear seat back to center of drivers seat.

Rear shoulder room
E39 - 57"
E90 - 56"
But when sitting in the back they did not feel any different

Rear headroom
E39 - 35.75"
E90 - 35.5"

Front headroom - with drivers seat set as low as it would go.
E39 and the E90 have identical 37" of headroom

If the back seat is as big as an e39 it sure doesn't feel it. It's pretty tight back there for my tastes, but I think that has more to do with the door opening and the curve of the outside seat cushion. Once I was in I felt fine, but getting in and out took some contorting.

In the rear facing position my son's car seat can't fit in either outboard position without the seats being moved forward.

Keep in mind the touring doesn't have any more trunk space than the sedan, you just get to stack vertically.

From the front seat, I couldn't feel that much of a difference. I think I had more elbow room, but overall, it was not that much difference.

The increase in size went mostly to the back seats, it seems. Again, its not a huge difference, but there definately was more leg room and head room in the back seats. I'm not over 6 feet, so I have felt cramped in the back seat of a e46. Those of you who are, would definately welcome the extra size in the back seats...

Thanks for all the feedback

thanks everyone! all your comments are good to think about. I realize that an extra inch of leg room or shoulder room may not seem like much, but as others have said, it all adds up.

I'll make a visit to the dealership and actually sit in the E90 to get a feel of it.

Just as a side note to the measurements that I posted: The back seat of the E60 5 series measured out to have 57" of shoulder room, which is identical to the E39. However the back seat of the E60 felt much roomier than either the E90 or E39. (The E60 also had about 1" more rear leg room than the E90)

So I think there is more to it than the just the measured dimensions because even though the E60 measured the same width, it felt like I had more room.

I never owned an E46, but part of the reason why I feel the E90 rear seat has more room is because of how deep the seat is. You sit back far enough and down in the seat that it really makes it seem larger than it actually is. Im a fan, but Ill never be sitting in the back of my car
