Unhappy E39, 530d. Transmission clunk and rattle noise

Iím getting a transmission clunk and rattle noise from under the car. The rattle occurs when going over bumps. Transmission clunk occurs when I change gear (manual shift) This clunk occurs if car is slowing down and I accelerate again. ie take my foot on and off accelerator.

I checked the exhaust and the mounting bracket that fix to gearbox. Both are okay. In fact I replaced the bracket on gear box, it was broken. Noise unfortunately is still there.

Iím thinking noise could be from front PropShaft support bracket or could be PropShaft bearing itself. Any ideas? Could the PropShaft bearing be creating the rattle?

Also how difficult is it to change the front PropShaft support bracket?

Sounds like a bad u joint in either the driveshaft (propshaft), or mabey a rear axle. Sounds to me like there is a little play that causes the shaft to make the sound when the play is taken up. If you can, go under the car and wiggle the drive shaft and see where there there is play, if any.

Clunk noise was from the rubber bush that sits between the gear box and propshaft. Rubber bush is fixed with 6 bolts (3 from gearbox and 3 from propshaft) It had too much play. After that was replaced noise went away. You can test if its got too much play by putting a spanner on one of the nuts and turning it. If bolts move a little in the rubber bush its got to much play. By the way I had to partly remove the exhaust to get to the rubber mounting. You also need a large 18mm spanner. Nuts are very tight.

Only thing now remaining is the rattle which appears to come from the left side when I go over a bumps. Its just like a kids rattle. I can only hear it, when the window is down. Someone mentioned it could be the cover plate on the brake assembly. I check that out. If anyone else has other ideas they will be appreciated.

I have identical noises on my recently acquired 530d.
Front propshaft coupling is u/s, hence clunk from drivetrain.

Rattle was rear inner brake pads rattling in caliper, I thought it was the also u/s anti roll bar links, but it still rattled after replacing them.
If you can get a finger on to the rear pad it moves quite easily, changed discs, pads (ate) and parking brake shoes - rattles have gone.

I had same rattle on my 523i. It was the brake backing plate, added washer, problem fixed.
