BMW's Embarassment

I've had the car for 24 hours now and BMW's tracking system on its website, for "Owner's Online," shows that it's still on the way to the VPC. It arrived at the VPC Saturday and this is Wednesday.

In an age when accuracy and speed are everything BMW's attempt to provide a tracking experience to its customers is an embarassment.

BMW should either take the system seriously and update it regularly (like UPS, FedEx, Avis and others do, by inputting data as events change), or they should just do away with the system.

Henry Royce once said "If a thing is worth doing, it's worth doing well."

If you're reading this BMW NA, you need to fix your house.

(Not the car - the car's great.)

This really shouldn't be very difficult to do. As recently as the late 90's
the DCS (dealer communication system) was awful, but DCS 2000 was a
major improvement (as far a vehicle tracking and information goes).
Why not provide real-time data to customers?

What do you guys think this is? 2005?

Seriously though, as a partner at a software engineering firm I see both sides of this:
(1) It's not that difficult -- just DO IT!
(2) Only do something if there's a business case that justifies it.

I'm guessing there's either something that is making this really complex, or BMW just figures "They're tracking a car they just BOUGHT, so we don't need to give them real time squat. Why spend the cash?"

Off topic here...

A much better quote which I think most people should think about***********:

"If it's worth doing, it's worth doing badly."
-G.K. Chesterton

What often stops people from starting an enterprise is this subconscious requirement to do it perfectly.

Oh please, not as bad as UPS/FedEx tracking!
That would mean that a new car would be shown as "delivered" even though the car had been left "on the truck" "by mistake" or that the car was delivered to a similar (but completely wrong) address, or even to the wrong country!

Roger that...

Although I was really happy when the sales rep called to say my car was ready to pick up! I didn't expect it for a few more days at least. Could it be they're trying to make themselves look good by having the car arrive faster than the tracking system can log it?

Hmmmm.....

That's a good point, but I don't think BMW is organized enough to have thought it through. Also, I am no longer impressed with how "fast" BMW is getting the car to me since it's supposedly still on the boat on the way over from Bremerhaven while I'm driving it in Sunny California.

BMW just doesn't care. It sets up systems, gives them to people who are incompetent, and doesn't fire them. Hmmm. Perfectly qualified to move to the top of the Bush Administration.

Yeah BMW messed me up a few yrs ago. Their tracking system shows my car was on a certain boat but in fact it missed the boat and didn't ship out for another 2 weeks or so. SEeing this information I sold my car 2-3 weeks early and had nothing to drive. If they can't keep it up to date why offer it at all.

Whoo Hoo - at the VPC Now

You'd think BMW would update its vehicle tracking information accurately, if not timely. A couple of hours ago my vehicle hit the VPC. Whoo hoo!. Only problem is it's been inmy garage since Wednesday night. Perhaps I should charge BMW rent if they think my garage is their VPC.

Great cars. Uneven service. Lousy website. I think they can move right into new positions at FEMA.

With the technology available these days I bet grocery stores keep better track of a can of beans!

Tsk, tsk, tsk, BMWNA! Perhaps you need to (a) look at the replication in your Oracle/DB2/SQL Server/Sybase/MySQL database (b) If you're not replicating, and just updating your database through batch jobs, perhaps you should consider real-time replication (for example, Quest Software has a product for Oracle (and I think SQL Server and DB2) called Shareplex that does real-time database replication [for Oracle, it uses the redo logs])

Or...perhaps your network (routers and switches and hubs, oh my) needs a little tuning??

(a) is based on the assumption that there is a source database located in Munich (?) and target databases located in North America, etc. Of course, I'm just speculating....

Problem is, BMW NA HAS the information, it is just that the Owner's Circle public access is WAY behind.

Go back to your bike and complete your deliveries as well as your education; your first "your" should be "you're." I realize homonyms are tough for you. When you read to yourself do your lips move?!

UCLA is not a private school, Paperboy (though Harvard Law is). I made my money the old fashioned way: I earned it myself. And I started as a newsman, and worked my way through college, so you apparently delivered my stuff. So, on the whole, thanks Paperboy.
