Drove an M550 last week - is this the best BMW can do?

The lease was up on my F30 335 last month. Walked the dealer lot looking for something interesting to replace it with. An M3/M4 was not a big enough improvement vs my Dinan modded 335 so I tried an M550 after all of the SA hype about how its the best car BMW makes. What a disappointment. The brand new interior isn't even up to Audi standards. Its way to heavy (still) and doesn't handle well. Its essentially a 540 with a bit more HP - $82K for that. Unfortunately BMW really doesn't have a step up car for people coming our of 335/340s. An X4M40i? An X3M40i? Really? The next M3/M4 better be a whole lot better than the current car. The BMW value proposition is getting very thin these days. Hope they understand that.

The G30 styling is not suited for the "M" look IMO. Wish BMW still made a real M5 and I don't like the 4-wheel drive.

Have you considered a Corvette?

The OP already has a sports car, presumably the OP needs a somewhat larger vehicle as the second vehicle.

What about a Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglia?

What about the M6? This is the one I am considering for my next BMW because of the rear wheel drive and V8 with 550 horsepower.

There's a guy on Audiworld who just traded a 2018 SQ5 Prestige in on a 2018 M550i. He had the SQ5 for less than 5 months and put only 1K on it. I'm sure he took a bath on the Audi but seems to be happy with the M550i.

Curious why the OP did so many mods to a leased car?

As for the comment "The BMW value proposition is getting very thin these days." I don't necessarily disagree, but their sales would say otherwise. I guess more Lexus and Mercedes drivers are switching over...

I had an Uber which was a new 530 Sport a couple of days ago.

Was really surprised it wasn't that roomy in the back and a little tight getting in/out.

Interior had some nice materials some cheap materials.

Also not convinced by the styling.

I think we expect a bit too much from these cars nowa days honestly lol, I hate how everyone says M3/M4 are terrible cars but yet they out sell C63s and any damn Audi. Numbers shows they can still perform i see M3/M4 everyday now if they were so bad people wouldn't be buying them is my point. When consumers scream luxury, Manufactures make the cars softer then we scream its so calm and tamed, Gentlemen that is why the new M5 is bigger and has 600HP which is also why it now has available AWD because there is no way a almost 5000lb car is getting off the line at WOT with at much Power to the rear wheels alone. All im saying is stop the bashing a nagging, they are trying to please us all so if the M550 aint good enough go Lease a S550 or actually a S560 now with all due respect of course OP.

I rented a C63 (non-S) sedan for a couple of weeks earlier in the year and apart from the engine which was amazing I thought the car was rubbish. The transmission was as coarse as any I'd ever driven. I could not pull away from a stop smoothly; it stuttered and balked until it gathered itself up. It did OK with full-power launches but for everyday use it was awful. And as critical as people seem to be of the Harmon Kardon system I think it sounds worlds better than the Burmester system in the C63. Disappointing as I'd always had a lot of respect for the three-pointed star. It made my decision to go BMW much easier.

If you're going to spend $1000's to upgrade a 335 and then are disappointed with an M3 then there's no satisfying you. Everyone knows the 5 series is now a luxury car and has been since the F10. I'd like to ask the OP what sedan would satisfy him? Perhaps the Giulia Quadrofoglia?

Dinan has mods for F80/F82 too, would that be a good enough step up to modded 335i?

Another option is i8.

The m550i is not a 540 with extra hp. M550 has a better Dhp than the 540. Since you can not get m adaptive suspension on the 540. As for the interior the g30 has a better interior than the present a6 although the next gen a7 and a8 has a cool looking interior. I was disappointed with the interior quality on the 2gen q5. Their are a lot more cheaper plastics compared to the A4 interior.

I some what agree with you about M3/M4 not being big enough improvement from a dinan tuned 335, im not sure what sort of improvement you are looking for but if you looked at the M550 im guessing something bigger and more luxury that is less sporty. Why you would think a M550 is going to handle well says alot about what you know about luxury sedans. But if i may, i would recommend the new E63 AMG Sedan or an Highly specd Audi S6 both pretty powerful and tune-able also lots of comfort an luxury. Hope i helped

I always thought it was kinda sad how BMW got "best car we've ever tested" (from CR?) with the E39, then consciously and steadily walked away from that type of sporty sedan with the 5-series. I don't believe a 5-series has won a comparo in Car and Driver since the E39, has it? A harbinger of things to come with the 3-series, I suspect.

Anyway, as others have mentioned OP should look at Alfa. Or perhaps Porsche Panamera (if you can get over the looks). Or even whatever Caddy v-edition fits their size.

The new Panamera is much more attractive. But donít they start at about $90k?

Thereabouts. But a well-equipped M550i is also 90k. Given the OP's comments he might prefer a stripped Panamera to a loaded M550i.

Possibly. Isn't the Panamera a 7 series competitor though? By the way you can pretty well load a M550i for $80K. A lightly optioned Panamera AWD (the M550i is AWD) is about $100K.

More like a 6 series Gran Coupť competitor.

I owned a first gen Panamera S (V8) and it is an awesome car, performs like a Porsche, quiet, comfortable. Uuuuuuuuugly to many people, I got a lot of compliments on it.

What is to hate about F80M/M3? The M3 base is a better deal than a decked out 340i with all those expensive M performance kits, right?
