Jó napat kivánok after 747 km

OK, there´s a reason I titled the thread in Hungarian (translation: ,,good day``).

Just back from a 747 km drive to Hungary and back to Berchtesgaden.

Too tired to go into detail, but here are some photos.

I did get a chance to practice my Hungarian vocabulary (which is somewhat limited) and enjoyed some nice palacsintá (chestnut filling) and Hungarian coffee.

Did you make it all the way to Budapest? First time there - what did you think about that city?

No, 747 km roundtrip just made it to the border crossing and a bit inside Sopron.

Budapest would´ve been a bit further.

Didn´t really answer your budapest question, even though I wasn´t there on my brief visit to Hungary.

Budapest is a beautiful city - it is actually 2 cities, Buda and Pest (technically 3, O Buda, Buda and Pest but who´s counting?). Food is great, it´s less expensive than many other euro. capitals. Keep in mind, it was the parallel seat of the Dual Monarchy so there is a strong Habsburg influence in buildings etc.

People are great. It´s funny, because I speak a little Hungarian, people always say to me there ,,Papa was Hungarian, great!`` I´ve given up on correcting them rather than trying to explain that we are from Bécs (Wien).

Good question.

I left in a fairly leisurely fashion. After a nice breakfast (and packing a nice lunch to go from the buffet - the staff was so kind as to provide alu foil), I did some photography of the car in front of the hotel, getting the various views. It was fun having the hotel staff keep guests away.

I guess I left around 11:00. I got back around 20:00. So that is 13 hours away from home base. But I made frequent stops, sometimes to take pictures, sometimes for Kaffee.

I just had to check out this thread HA. I'm hungarian so your thread title caught my eye.

i never thought of driving to Hungary with a euro delivery. I always thought if i did it id put around Germany. but thats a great idea.

It was a nice drive - and I´m glad you noticed the thread. I´m Austrian, not Hungarian but I did study Hungarian at Uni (in München).

My last euro. delivery, I covered D, A, I, and CH. This time I visited D, A, I, and H. I guess I left off the C.

It was my first time driving into Hungary since I was very little (ok, I didn´t drive then, my father did). On earlier eur. deliveries, I covered the above (not incl. H) plus Liechtenstein (don´t know the letter code there).

It's fun to read your reports. Nice you like the Obersalzberg Resort. I think it's a transformed US-Army Rec Resort.

The "Gröfaz" knew the nice spots where to build his "Eagles Nest".

Thanks, I am glad you enjoy them. Putting my thoughts down here is helping me prepare for two articles I'm writing as well.

And yes, you are right re the Eagles Nest. I am familiar with the history of the resort as well - in fact there's an article in Conde Nast Traveler about it this month.

I guess I cannot recall seeing a car with FL on the ankleber - so that was a mystery to me. Thanks for that.

It's now approaching 0330 according to my body clock and I'm much too tired for details (will post a summary soon) but things went OK for me and Jillyz after we left you.

On the passport control line in Munich this afternoon I saw Ashish just ahead of me and we spoke briefly about travels.

Have a good flight on Tuesday.

FL = Florida!!

Coordinated Universal Time - This is the first time I am hearing of this concept. I thought GMT (Greenwich) was the standard.

Ja, have been busy. Glad things went well after you went dowh the mountain. We were at 950m up by the way. The main street below was at 550 m!

No word here from Ashish though other than your post... good that you saw him.

My wife and I visited Budapest in 2004 - wonderful city. Her father was Hungarian, and the few words she could remember from childhood made people smile. It's a friendly place. We didn't drive in - we took the Danube Hydrofoil from Vienna to Budapest. It was an amazing way to travel.

We did rent a car one day for a drive to Lake Balaton. Driving in Hungary was no problem, just slower than Germany. I also got to attend the F1 race at the Hungaroring - spectacular!

Yeah, we met Rich at Munich Airport.. He mentioned that when you are with an expert like Jonathan, you get best out of your time. Our flight got delayed because of some engine filter problem. Will post pictures by evening.

Trip to Interlaken was great. It was all sunny while we were there.

Jonthan, you are having too good a time. Some of the pictures are great. I think we should have just followed you.. :-)Your car pics look great. After all it is Sparkling Graphite. :-)
